Our guide

Finding the right Leisure show for you

You might be halfway through browning butter when you wonder whether that sudden quiet in the pan is good news. A useful cooking podcast can answer at exactly that level: listen closely, watch what changes, take the pan off the heat. The best hobby listening makes another person’s attention contagious. You can borrow their expertise, or simply enjoy someone who cares.

Choosing that company now involves more than choosing a subject. As podcasting makes more room for video, listeners have reason to ask whether a demonstration still makes sense with the screen dark. Does criticism explain a reviewer’s taste, or merely encourage a purchase? Does travel listening acknowledge practical difficulties? An instructional episode needs your concentration; a sprawling conversation may be pleasant precisely because it asks so little of you.

Cooking alongside someone, or thinking about dinner

Burnt Toast offers a convincing reason to use your ears in the kitchen. In Molly Gilbert Makes Apple Fritter Cake, Gilbert talks while the butter cooks, explaining that its diminishing noise signals the approach of browning. She describes the amber stage and removes the pan from the heat, accounting for the cooking that continues afterward. The commentary gives a changing process something a printed instruction cannot: a person keeping pace with it.

Home Cooking approaches the kitchen through whatever has gone awkward. In White Fra-chili-ty (with Sam Sanders), Samin Nosrat and Hrishikesh Hirway suggest meals requiring no chopping. Their conversation takes its time getting there, with jokes along the way, but the suggestions acknowledge that ability and available effort change what dinner can be. Choose it for inventive problem-solving and companionship; choose Burnt Toast to follow one dish. Continue through Cooking & Chefs within the Food & Drink hub.

Food stories that leave the kitchen

Knowing how to cook something and understanding why people eat it are different pleasures. The Sporkful’s How To Read A Taco (Reheat) follows professor Steve Alvarez and his students on a taco crawl. Ariana describes reconsidering the idea that Tex-Mex is somehow less authentic. Moving between conversation and restaurant visits lets that question belong to people with different relationships to the food, rather than making authenticity a verdict issued from above.

Gastropod builds another excursion in Canned Tomatoes and the Myth of the San Marzano. Cynthia Graber and Nicola Twilley visit a tomato field and a company kitchen, where a canned tomato arrives in a miniature caprese salad. Their surprised tasting gives the agricultural discussion an immediate point of contact. They also explain that the producer sells large cans to restaurants and food companies, a useful limit on the listener’s sudden desire to buy exactly what they tasted.

Drinks, with the reasoning left in

A tasting becomes interesting when someone can explain a preference. On The Scotchy Bourbon Boys, Whiskey, Reimagined The New Orleans Way with Master Blender Kieran Walsh gives Walsh room to describe his interest in used barrels and a less dominant oak presence. The conversation moves through his whiskey base and herbal infusions, with plenty of host chatter. It rewards patience from listeners who want a maker’s decisions rather than a brisk bottle verdict. Continue through Whiskey & Spirits.

Games worth playing, and games worth discussing

For choosing your next game, look for criticism that describes the decisions you will actually make. Triple Click’s Triple Play: Resident Evil Requiem discusses starting with a single bullet and deciding how to make it count. The hosts connect scarcity to the changing experience of gaining ammunition and confidence. They keep the public discussion away from major spoilers and distinguish it from a separate members’ conversation. Their reasoning is more useful than a simple assurance that the game is scary.

The Besties makes differences in taste explicit. In Scott Pilgrim vs. Millennial Nostalgia, the panel discusses lowering the difficulty to get the relaxed beat-em-up experience some of them wanted. Their complaints about the structure can also help a listener recognise something they would enjoy. Both shows belong alongside Game Reviews in the Video Games hub.

Curiosity about how games get made calls for another pace. Remap Radio’s The Story of Minishoot’ Adventures asks developer Severin about abandoning an abstract environment for a world with distinct regions. He describes a goal of returning to a death location within 20 seconds, using boosts and unlocked shortcuts. Exploration becomes a problem someone had to solve. Head toward Gaming News & Culture for that interest.

Around the table: playing and improvising

Recorded role-playing offers the pleasure of hearing a story negotiated into existence. The Adventure Zone makes the negotiation part of the comedy. In The Adventure Zone Royale: Episode 12, a doorstep prank becomes a house fire after an unexpectedly powerful roll. Rules have consequences even when the players would prefer a smaller joke.

Critical Role allows more room for deliberation. In King of Cards | Critical Role | Campaign 4, Episode 21 Part 2, the party discusses how asking questions might expose both themselves and an informant, then works through a diversion in the sewers. These are continuing stories: a numbered campaign episode asks you to remember people and previous decisions. The Glass Cannon Podcast’s Pendragon adventures also let personality traits shape play, including whether a knight gives money to someone asking for help. Continue through Tabletop & Board Games according to which kind of table you want to join.

Making room for the hobby

The attraction of collecting often resides in details too small for anyone else to notice. The Bricks King Podcast: LEGO’s Ep. 419 Bricklink Designer Program Series 10 Finalists examines removable roofs, faction tents and a train station’s possibilities for display and play. Host Matt also wonders about prices. His excited descriptions work best when you can look at the builds, but questions about space, use and expense carry over to audio.

Making can begin with something less elaborate. ThisWeekInGeek’s TWIG's The Spellbook - Episode 10 - TTRPG Gift Ideas Discussion explains why a painting handle helps keep fingers off a miniature, then considers used books and inexpensive substitutes. Together, these shows give Collecting & Making, within the Hobbies hub, a practical point of entry.

Growing requires another kind of attention. Gardening Inside Out’s Garden Snacks featuring Janet Lefever | Ep. 3 gets down to a porch plant blooming unevenly where it receives less sun. It is a modest problem, specific enough to be useful: a direction for the Home & Garden hub and Gardening & Outdoor Living page.

Going somewhere, and enjoying the way there

Sort travel podcasts by whether you want a plan or a journey. Travel with Rick Steves supplies conversation and workable possibilities. In 795 Liverpool; Finding Ancient Roman Art; Home Base Hiking in Europe, Cassandra Overby discusses staying in one place and choosing daily walks, including routes connected by public transport. The Travel hub’s Destination Guides and Travel Tips & Planning pages are useful next directions.

The Dirtbag Diaries’ Bridging Oceans asks for a different sort of attention. Jared Gentz and Nikki Chu describe connecting waterways from the Pacific toward the Arctic, then revising their route. Their account includes cold, difficult crossings and equipment decisions they reconsidered. The story earns its scale through those specifics; hear it as an expedition account rather than an itinerary. It leads toward Adventure & Outdoor Travel and the Outdoor Activities hub.

Closer to home, She Explores’ A Deeper Connection - Mugdha Flores finds pleasure in tide pools and volunteer salmon surveys. For an entirely constructed destination, Missing the Mouse picks apart attraction music and signs in 471: Pretend That You’re Hearing the Music, rewarding the kind of Disney interest that continues long after the visit. Go deeper through Theme Parks & Attractions.
