Finding the right Automotive show for you
A dashboard light comes on halfway home, and the drive suddenly has a question attached. Is it the gas cap, or something that will cost a month's rent? Car podcasts can help in that moment. They also fill idler hours: deciding whether a used Land Rover is a bargain or a trap, or listening to friends argue about which old sports car they would rescue first.
The range is wider than the shelf label suggests. There are call-in repair shows that read their phone numbers on air, testers who buy their cars and then pick apart the climate controls, one-make clubs that sound like a car meet after dark, collectors pricing Ferraris, and long, profane hangouts where the car is mostly an excuse. Many people now meet podcasts in both audio and video. In Edison Research's release of March 2026, 58% of Americans aged 12 and over had consumed a podcast in the preceding month, and 57% had both listened to and watched one. Neither figure isolates car shows.
Listeners argue about two things in particular. One is structure: a loose show can feel like good company, or like a conversation that never gets anywhere. The other is money. In a September 2026 r/cars discussion, one commenter lamented the shortage of cheap, enjoyable cars for younger enthusiasts, and another replied that inexpensive fun used cars were still available. The shows divide along that line too.
Buying advice from people who paid for the car
Talking Cars is a Consumer Reports panel, published as both Talking Cars (MP3) and Talking Cars (Video). Early in 2026 Subaru Outback Premium & Touring XT, the panel states what it paid: $40,098 for one trim and $50,290 for the other. The discussion then works through the gap between 180 and 260 horsepower, including the strain of merging onto a highway with the base engine. The panel can laugh at its own consensus ("My goodness, you guys, this is such a boring podcast"), but it is most useful when it disagrees. In 2026 Mazda CX-5 Premium Plus, one panelist likes the softened ride and another finds it busy and hates the seats. The episode also warns that the car they drove was an early model, so its criticisms come with a footnote. In 2026 Nissan Sentra SV, a rant about touch-sensitive climate controls will be familiar to anyone who has jabbed at a screen in traffic.
Wheel Bearings, with Sam Abuelsamid, Nicole Wakelin and Roberto Baldwin, adds industry interviews and news. In Live From Las Vegas, recorded at CES over terrible Wi-Fi, a host describes an Infiniti QX80 whose tailgate opened twice for no reason he could find. CarCast leans toward personality. CarCast+Edmunds - Comparing nine small SUVs, self driving technology, Edmunds buys a new RAM truck and more. moves from small SUVs to a Waymo ride, and one host calls the robotaxi "the most polite driver in L.A."
When something sounds wrong
Call-in shows trade conversation for triage. WCCO's Car Care pairs a radio host with technician Nick Stoffel of Lloyd's Automotive. In Brake Basics, Why the Check Engine Light is On, Straightening the Steering Wheel, the check engine light is explained as really an emissions light. A loose gas cap is a common cause, but the episode warns against assuming that is the only one. Turbocharge vs. Supercharge, When to Rotate Tires, Parking Brake Problems turns a listener's roughly $3,000 turbo repair into an argument for frequent oil changes.
Auto Talk Radio, Brian Bowersock's San Diego show, covers similar ground with more local colour. Early in EV’s and the cost of ownership, the hosts cite that day's average county gas price of $6.37 and move toward whether an electric car suits a listener's driving. Sponsor reads are frequent in this episode, and one is presented as a listener Q&A, so it helps to separate the shop talk from the ad copy.
One make, one community
Some of the warmest listening comes from owners who share a badge. The LRM Podcast, Land Rover Monthly's show with Martin Domoney and Steve Miller, offers advice earned the hard way. In How to avoid getting ripped off when buying a Land Rover, angle grinder inflation and The Crusty Sport, the hosts explain what it means when the same defects return on a vehicle's MOT history year after year: the owner never fixed them. They also treat a seller's request for a PayPal friends-and-family deposit as an instant no. Tackling a restoration, Land Rover dogs and diff pinion oil seals includes a frank disclaimer ("We're just normal people") and a warning against stripping a project to a bare chassis and then losing heart.
The People's Car does the same for Volkswagen and Audi, with less polish. In 166. Good times are coming!, a pothole met while crossing from Pennsylvania into New York bubbles a tire. The fix becomes a hunt for a used tire with matching tread, which is enthusiast detail at its most specific. Jeep Talk Show is lighter. Fake Badges on Your Jeep | Here's What the Community Says debates stolen Jeep valor, and one participant admits getting a trail badge by checking in from the parking lot and then skipping the trail. Trucks, trails and the road beyond
Truck shows mix spec sheets with dirt. Early in S3, E87 - Moab Jeep Concepts, The Truck Show Podcast host Sean P. Holman reports taking his Jeep off-road for the first time on new Bilstein shocks. S3, E81 - All About PPF is for anyone confused by paint protection film and ceramic coating. Its main point is that the coating is not the right thing for preventing scratches.
On TFL Talkin' Trucks, Why Is Toyota Racing This Tundra On 37s? Deep Dive! | Ep. 326 features a Toyota team member who describes driving part of a desert race lap in pitch darkness. He sums up the team's caution: "to finish first, you must first finish." In New Nissan Trucks Are Coming! | Ep. 327, a host admits he nearly bought a used semi at a donated-car auction.
The Overland Podcast, with Tony and Joey, treats the vehicle as a way to reach a campsite. In S8E25 - Changing Setups, one host refuses to replace a rooftop tent he has slept in across "like 14 different States." For the camping and trip side, the Outdoor Activities and Travel pages go further.
Friends, opinions and the long hang
This is where the argument about structure applies most. The Smoking Tire, hosted by Matt Farah and Zack Klapman, runs 108 minutes in Vantage S Review; that Ford GT Lap; the Peril of Selling a Project, with plenty of swearing. It also contains sharp judgments. One host sums up the Aston Martin: "The emotional side of me would buy this over a 911 Turbo." The hosts also prefer the older, slower Ford GT on the road ("It's better on the road, because it's worse"), and they warn individuals against turning a car into a project while they still owe money on it.
Driving While Awesome, with Lane Skelton, Waarren Madsen and Art Cervantes, is cosier. F.A.T. Ice Race, Car We Would Erase From History, and the Best First Car praises the Lexus LS 400 as the tortoise that outlasted its flashier rivals and talks through a teenage daughter's first car. The Revival Motoring Podcast is rowdier. In We are on a path., a host describes lowering his car what he thinks was another inch and then hearing an axle give up on the highway. Hard Parking with Jhae Pfenning wanders furthest from cars. Early in Devan Antram Returns: Funeral Cars + Oregon Bourbon | Hard Parking 321, a Honda minivan retrofitted for funeral work leads the conversation.
Collectors and historians
The Collector Car Podcast, hosted by RM Sotheby's consultant Greg Stanley, explains how the market thinks. 413: The Bachman Ferrari Effect with Chris Miele covers why a manual 575 Maranello now outvalues paddle-shift versions: buyers once needed a special allocation to get a manual. In 414: Collectible Classics Joey Benjamini Redefining the Dealership Model, Benjamini says his business can handle 250 cars a month and aims for 1,000.
Stanley also guests on Driven Radio Show #347: Greg Stanley of the Collector Car Podcast, hosted by Brett Hatfield and Mark L. Groves. He tips the 550 Maranello as a Ferrari he thinks is about to take off, and the talk detours into red-on-red interiors. For history without the price tags, Car Show! with Eddie Alterman tells how Volkswagen's Beetle found its first American buyers in From Business History: De-Nazifying the Love Bug: The VW Beetle Story Part II.
