A field guide

A listener's guide to Parenting Advice podcasts

A child is sobbing in the cereal aisle, a stranger is giving you the look, and you have about ten seconds to decide what kind of adult to be. Parenting advice podcasts at their best work in that gap. They slow the moment down, separate what the child is doing from what the parent is feeling, and send you off with a sentence you could actually say out loud. These shows are made for adults, heard on the commute or over the washing-up. The good ones take the listener's composure as seriously as the child's behaviour.

The arguments around them are unsettled. In March 2025, The Week set the complaint that gentle parenting demands time many parents lack against advocates' view that it reduces conflict and helps children manage everyday life. Listeners also split between wanting instruction and wanting company, and some ask where advice ends and selling begins. Podcasting itself keeps its reach. Edison's March 2026 release reported that 58% of Americans aged 12 and over had consumed a podcast in the previous month, though that figure covers the whole medium rather than parenting shows.

Psychologists with a script in hand

The clinician-hosted shows earn their place with usable words. On Good Inside with Dr. Becky, clinical psychologist Becky Kennedy builds My Number One Job as a Parent Is Not to Make You Happy around parents who cannot say no. She then lands a line she admits is pitched to provoke: "Saying no to our kids is an important way of showing our kids we love them." Near the end she offers a script she says she has used with her own children.

Is It True? If I Don’t Punish, I’m Permissive (with Myleik Teele) is looser and more searching. It moves from the passer-by's judging look to a childhood in which embarrassment was answered with embarrassment. It also considers parents who fear their child will be punished more harshly than white peers.

The Parenting Pair Podcast is hosted by child and adolescent clinical psychologists Dr. Annalise Caron and Dr. Suzanne Allen. In Why Your Teen Won't Open Up (And What Actually Helps), a host with three teenagers confesses that her curiosity can slide into "surveillance mode." The episode works toward wondering rather than knowing, and toward hard talks broken into five- or ten-minute stretches or moved to text. Near the end, a note says the show is for informational and educational purposes and is no substitute for professional care.

On Raising Good Humans, developmental psychologist Dr. Aliza Pressman asks her guest in Real Ways to Stay Regulated When Parenting Feels Overwhelming w/ Dr. Elisha Goldstein to start with a meditation. The listener is guided through a body scan and a four-count breath before the conversation proper. The Gentle & Positive Parenting page sits next door.

Parents talking to parents

Some shows trade credentials for company. Angie, host of Parenting Through The Hard, presents herself as a mom rather than an expert, and speaks to parents of teens and adult children in crisis. In The Long Middle: Parenting a Child Struggling with Addiction she names the grief that arrives once things settle: "Clarity often comes after the storm, not during it." Addiction is discussed directly, and faith is part of the frame.

Parents of the Year pairs Andrew Stewart with his wife, child psychologist Dr. Caroline Buzanko, and in the money episode lets household chatter run before the topic arrives. In 220. What money lessons should every child learn before leaving home?, they recount a daughter whose plan to buy a truck stalled at the cost of filling it. She bought a small Mustang instead, a decision nobody had to make for her. For more from fathers, see the Fatherhood page.

Carpool Conversations, hosted by Amy Lowe and Sara Jones, is faith-based. Near the end of Releasing Anger & Growing in Patience as a Parent, it gives parents a question to put to their kids about a recent time they noticed a parent's anger, and how it felt.

Other Peoples Parenting supplies the laughs. Karen Quinn and her daughter Schuyler Hurwitz read parenting books and give you the gist. Their verdict on The Whole Brain Child - Get All Parts of Your Child’s Brain to Work Together for One Happy Kid was that the content was interesting but "Dry like a triscuit."

Hard subjects, handled head-on

Narrow shows can be the most useful. Amy Lang, a sex and parent educator, hosts Just Say This! How to talk with ALL kids about sex! in a frank, sweary style meant for adult ears. In Neurodivergent kid struggles with impulse control and gal can't keep her hands out of her pants -- Episode 192, she proposes a code word to practise, "mittens," and cautions against a shaming tone. The Special Needs Parenting page is a neighbour.

Parenting Without Power Struggles, hosted by family therapist Susan Stiffelman, gives 1:79 Co-Parenting with a Narcissist, with Dr. Ramani Durvasula to a single problem, and its guest's advice about news you do not need to share is blunt: "don't share the good news. Don't share the bad news." Peace at Home Parenting Podcast speaks plainly in Honest Conversations About Suicide Prevention, which covers making a home safe for a child at risk. It is a heavy listen, best heard without children in the room.

Sorting by the age in the house

Teen shows do their own kind of translation. In Teen Sleep Help with Dr. Melisa Moore on Joyful Courage for Parenting Teens, host Casey O'Roarty and her guest note that an after-school drink taken for lemonade can carry a lot of caffeine. The episode also suggests moving conflict-heavy talks earlier than bedtime. Younger sleepers have the Baby & Child Sleep page, and the earliest years have Toddlers & Early Childhood. The Parenting guide and the Kids & Family category guide map the wider field.
