A small-town newscast reads the heat index and then the obituaries. A Springdale interview show talks to a woman who dances on a street corner.

What Arkansas is

Arkansas is a state in the south-central United States. The Mississippi River forms its eastern border. The Ozark and Ouachita mountains rise in the north and west, and flat Delta farmland spreads across the east. Little Rock is the capital. The University of Arkansas, home of the Razorbacks, is in Fayetteville in the state's northwest corner. The state is known for rice, poultry, timber and its lakes and rivers.

The Razorbacks, argued from several chairs

The Razorbacks shows share one subject, but each takes a different angle on it. HawgSports Live is the most information-dense. It lives in practice updates, standings math and message-board context. In one clip, Connor Goodson warns that basketball teams costing $18 million could force schools to choose between basketball and football spending. In another, he and Trey Biddy name Mustafa Cham as the top transfer target Arkansas has not yet landed.

Locked On Razorbacks - Daily Podcast On Arkansas Razorbacks Football & Basketball is one voice, John Nabors, thinking out loud in long, looping sentences. His clips come from the NCAA tournament. He calls the Sweet 16 game against Arizona a defining one for the program. He admits that Arkansas's March run came against favorable matchups, including two double-digit seeds, and argues that beating Arizona would erase the doubt. The Razorback Daily is a two-person show with a warmer tone, and it covers more sports than football and basketball. Its clips celebrate Maria Jose Marin winning the Augusta National Women's Amateur at a tournament-record 14 under, a year after she missed the cut. Quinn Grovey marks it as a win no Razorback or SEC golfer had managed before. The same episode covers Darius Acuff Jr. winning the Bob Cousy Award. The show's late-summer episode titles focus on quarterback KJ Jackson.

Hit That Line is a network of sponsor-named shows: the Bud Light Morning Rush, the Eastside Liquor Halftime show, and Ruscin & Zach. In its clips, hosts explain how Arkansas beat Georgia on five stolen bases, wild pitches and defense rather than home runs. Aaron Torres says college basketball's transfer portal now works almost like NBA free agency. Tommy Craft predicts that LIV Golf will collapse if its Saudi money disappears. Several of its episode titles are about horse racing at Oaklawn. Leaving The Yard, hosted by Chuck Zach in Texarkana, looks at the same sports from the state line. In its clips, the hosts argue that 45-run baseball games point to a pitching problem, and one titled episode asks "What's wrong with Van Horn's Hogs baseball team?"

Water, woods and row crops

The state's working landscape gets careful, technical treatment. Arkansas Wildlife, from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, has one of the best clips on the page. Kendall Moles calls freshwater mussels nature's oldest fishermen and explains how the females grow larval packets that look like aquatic insects so fish will come to them. The same episode places the Arkansas fat mucket mainly above the I-30 bridge on the Saline River. Another clip reports that Beaver Lake striped bass can reach 26 inches in four years. Recent episode titles cover chronic wasting disease in deer, the Lake Monticello story, and new hunting regulations.

Arkansas AgCast covers farm policy. It sounds like two people who know the ag world well enough to joke with and correct each other. Its clips cover a $1 billion USDA bridge payment for specialty crops, a bridge assistance program paying rice farmers close to $133 an acre, and a Farm Bill draft heading to markup. Arkansas Row Crops Radio, from the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, is closer to the field. Its Weeds AR Wild clips cover ryegrass that survived enormous doses of paraquat in North Carolina, ryegrass shifting to spring emergence in Mississippi, and Bob Scott laying out weed control in rice from burndown to after the flood.

Springdale, Fayetteville and the music around them

Northwest Arkansas has its own group of interview shows. District 3 Podcast is rooted in Springdale. In its most affecting clip, Downtown Dancing Vicki describes stepping onto the corner of 71 and Backus. She had sung in front of thousands, but she says she had never felt so scared. She had also forgotten to charge her mp3 player, so she went home and came back the next day. Other guests include Anna Ray on building an independent wrestling career through social media, and Papa Rap tracing Arkansas immigrant policy up to Huckabee's in-state tuition proposal.

The Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, also in Springdale, gives the area its history. One clip describes Otto Rayburn's Ozark Folk Encyclopedia of 229 volumes and how Rayburn promoted the Ozarks while fearing that tourists would destroy the culture he valued. Another explains how surveyors in 1858 stopped eight miles into the job because the legally correct Arkansas line was already wrong.

On the music side, The Livewire with Branden Lee gets Shawn James to tell how a ballad he recorded in Fayetteville, one bar crowds did not want to hear, became his biggest song after it appeared in The Last of Us. George's Live, the podcast of George's Majestic Lounge, has Cliff Aaron arguing that most of the talent he brought to shows in Nashville and Kansas was from Arkansas, and urging artists to leave their home market.

Conway County's morning

KVOM NewsWatch Podcast is the most local show here. In one clip it warns of a high of 104, a heat index near 115, and car interiors that turn lethal within minutes. Then it moves on to the seven-day outlook, an employee of the day at Morrilton City Hall, and the obituaries. Other clips feature Mayor Alan Lipsmeyer making the case for Issue 3 as a way to fill empty Morrilton buildings, and Brooke Duvall winning her final 4-H competition with an entomology talk.
