The guide

How Triathlon Training podcasts differ, and which to try

The best triathlon training podcasts do something a plan on your watch cannot: they explain why a session exists while you are halfway through it. At their sharpest, they talk you out of a bad idea before your legs have to pay for it. The arguments around them are about authority. When published research and a coach's instinct disagree, which should an age-grouper follow? Should a platform or a person write the plan? And when a fuelling product arrives with fanfare, who asks for the evidence?

Listeners already sort the field by purpose. In a February 2026 r/triathlon recommendation thread, commenters praised different shows for practical advice, host chemistry, access to professionals and training science. Triathlete reported in January 2025 that Ironman had moved into podcasting the year before.

Coaches arguing their method

Several of the most useful shows are run by working coaches, and the pleasure is hearing a philosophy defended at length. Get Fast Podcast - Triathlon, Ironman & Cycling Coaching Advice pairs host Jordan Donnelly with his father, former Australian Ironman champion Gerard Donnelly. It is at its best when the two disapprove of something. Our 14 Week Ironman Program Disaster takes up a request the show calls "like nails on a chalkboard." Mitch had never done an Ironman and wanted to race Busselton after 14 weeks of training. The hosts say a running injury pushed his program toward swimming and riding. The hosts then lay out the numbers, from a first 20-minute test of 228 watts to an Ironman ride of five hours 20 minutes averaging 191 watts. A case study persuades where a pep talk wouldn't.

Rob Wilby hosts the Oxygenaddict Triathlon Podcast for age-groupers with jobs and families. His guiding rule in How to Train for IRONMAN in Six Months | Ep 568 is to train "not so hard, so intense or so long that you can't train again tomorrow." In Six Months to IRONMAN: Smarter Swim Training for Busy Age-Groupers | Ep 572 he puts technique ahead of fitness. He breaks long swims into reps of about 100 metres with three to five seconds' rest, so that a tiring stroke doesn't get rehearsed.

Simon Olney's Age Group Triathlon Podcast is pitched at triathletes who pay for their own kit, and it has a contrarian streak. Episode 50- In Person vs Online Triathlon Coaching questions coaches who rush to change a runner's foot strike, noting how little evidence supports doing so. Episode 67- IRONMAN Wales on a Vegan Diet is looser: an account of Tenby, down to the marmite sandwich he was finishing as he started his final run lap.

One caution. Near the end, each of these episodes invites listeners to sign up for coaching, and Get Fast advertises an eight-week guarantee. The advice is sincere, and it is also a shop window.

Where the science gets argued

For listeners who want reasoning more than rules, this episode of That Triathlon Show goes long. Gordo Byrn on optimising Ironman training, the importance of volume and low intensity training, and practical age-group training lasts 119 minutes. It treats volume as the thing most amateurs struggle to build. For the time-poor, the advice is blunt: "don't negotiate with yourself," and set a fixed "basic week." The episode's most candid moment is an admission about not seeing a physio until after an injury, a delay that held back the guest's running for 18 months. Sponsor reads are long.

Triathlon Science, hosted by Dr Tom Hughes, is an older and shorter listen, with these episodes dating from early 2021. Episode 13 - Polarised running pt-1 runs 20 minutes. Its case for easy running is mechanical: slow, short steps train the leg's recoil system in small doses. In Episode 14 - High fat/Low carb for athletes. A speaker recalls a hillier race where he crashed so hard he had "no idea where I was." Expect detours into coffee for a sponsor.

Platforms, company and the pool

The argument over adaptive platforms and human coaches gets an inside view from The TriDot Triathlon Podcast, where TriDot's own coaches explain its workouts. The show admits limits. In Triathlon Training When the Wind Gets Wild, Coach Ryan says the platform adjusts for temperature, humidity and elevation, but "wind is not taken into account." The same episode trades worst-wind race stories, then gets practical about what to do when a gel is due in the middle of a crosswind.

Crushing Iron Triathlon Podcast, which its publisher says comes out on Mondays and Thursdays, is the pick for company. Mike and Robbie of C26 riff on pool excuses, including a lifeguard who couldn't find his testing strips, before landing real points. In #899 – One Speed Wonders, the point is swimmers whose all-out 25 matches their relaxed one. In #905 – Responsive and Adaptable On The Bike, it is what an hour of erg mode in front of Netflix fails to train.

Swimming nerves have their own specialist. Tri Swim Coach Podcast, hosted by Kevin Koskella, offers Let's Talk about Breathing (Solocast) - #160. The episode singles out breath-holding as a common culprit and teaches a drill built on a tiny sip of water. The Open Water Swimming page picks up from there. For composure on the day, try Lessons from Kona: How to Stay Composed When Everything Goes Wrong on The Triathlon Mental Performance Podcast. It treats resilience as prediction: "you're training your body to interpret it correctly." The Racing & Events page sits alongside, and the Triathlon guide and the Sports category guide map the wider field.
