The rundown

Some great Software & Apps podcasts to get to know

Picture a Teams user opening a group chat, spotting a new Notes tab and clicking it, expecting the OneNote notebook that sits behind the Notes tab in a channel. It opens Loop instead. The best software podcasts work in the gap between what changed and what it means for your afternoon. They explain who moved the button, what the new feature does and whether you should switch it on, leave it alone or ask IT to turn it off.

The range is wider than the label suggests. A trainer narrates a month of Microsoft 365 changes in plain English. A panel takes apart an article on data centres in orbit. A hobbyist explains the bare circuit board sitting on top of his fridge, and a gamification consultant walks through the psychology of scarcity. Some of these shows teach a skill, some track a market, and a few simply let you overhear people who build things.

There is a large audience for this kind of listening, though it is hard to measure precisely. Edison Research's Infinite Dial presentation in March 2026 put monthly podcast consumption at 58% of Americans aged 12 and over. That figure covers podcasting as a whole, and since 2025 it has counted watching as well as listening. Listeners are also arguing about what these shows should cover. In a July 2026 forum thread about one web-development show, one participant argued that AI talk had crowded out the rest of the craft, and another replied that using AI well is now part of the job. A listener also complained about discussion that only makes sense if you can see the presenter's screen. Both arguments run through the shows below.

Your house as the test bench

Home Assistant Podcast is the clearest case for software as something you live inside. Phil Hawthorne and Rohan Karamandi host, and the guest stories carry it. In How Mike is making heating smarter with Home Assistant, Mike, who lives outside Aberdeen in Scotland, explains why his office lights stay on while he works: a power monitor notices the desk drawing current, and the lights go out only when that draw drops. A millimetre-wave presence sensor lets his family eat dinner without the lights dipping. A door left open for five minutes suspends the heating until it has been shut for 10. His stated rule is that he should not need to touch a dashboard.

In Braden’s Reliable, Low-Cost Home Automation System With Zero YAML Powered by Home Assistant, the guest describes a freezer with a recurring thermocouple fault. He wired a cheap ESP32 board, a relay and a thermocouple into it. The board still sits uncased on top of the fridge, "and that's been three years now."

The release episodes of Home Assistant Podcast are more practical. Home Assistant 2026.2: New Home Dashboard, Apps & our CES2026 wrap advises renters to "have an exit plan from your smart home," and reads an email from a listener, Jake, who is retiring automations as his daughter turns one. The hosts talk fluently about Zigbee, ESPHome and Node-RED, so newcomers should start with a guest episode.

The Microsoft 365 desk

For many listeners, software means the suite their employer pays for, and four shows divide that territory. What's New in Microsoft 365 and Copilot? A Super Simple 365 Podcast. is a monthly filter. In #90 What’s new in Microsoft 365 and Copilot - October 2025, Mark Thompson walks through the Notes tab confusion described above and admits he is "hoping my organization turns it off." The limitation is that he narrates from the screen in this episode ("you can see here"), so some items assume you are watching.

SharePoint Maven Podcast is narrower and steadier. In Want Smarter Metadata in SharePoint? Discover the Term Store’s 14 Power Features., Greg Zelfand shows why central tags beat local columns. Merge two client names after a corporate merger, and within 24 hours the change appears across sites and libraries.

Microsoft Teams News, presented by Rob Scott of UC Today, treats Teams as a market. Early in Microsoft Teams Show (JULY 2025) Layoffs, AI Expansion & Copilot at Scale, panellist Tom discusses Microsoft's reported 9,000 layoffs and pauses on the "real people impacted" before moving on to Copilot's usage limits.

Digital Workplace Impact zooms out to organisational change. Nancy Goebel hosts for the Digital Workplace Group, so the research and award winners discussed are the group's own. Episode 166: Change agility at the speed of disruption sorts change agility into personal, relational and strategic kinds. Episode 163: How Vodafone is going beyond the WOW factor with AI at scale covers an early use of agents: assembling RFP responses. The Enterprise Technology page goes further.

Under the hood

When you want to know how software behaves after the launch post, Late Night Linux Family All Episodes bundles 2.5 Admins, Linux Dev Time, Hybrid Cloud Show and more into one feed.

  • In Linux Dev Time – Episode 148, the panel weighs a blog post calling Dependabot, a bot that flags out-of-date dependencies, "a noise machine," then argues about lock files and version pinning.
  • In Hybrid Cloud Show – Episode 54, also from Late Night Linux Family All Episodes, the hosts come back from KubeCon, and one worries about everything being bolted onto Kubernetes: "It's a giant state machine. That's all it's ever been."
  • In 2.5 Admins 295: Orbital Meltdown, from the same Late Night Linux Family All Episodes feed, the panel tests the orbital data centre pitch against cooling, radiation and debris. A host then recounts Google's AI summary confidently misreading an airline fare class.

The episodes run 25 to 28 minutes, and the shorthand assumes you write code or run servers. The Software Engineering page suits that listener.

Tech Bytes is the opposite proposition: short vendor segments, openly sponsored. In How to Get DPUs from Niche to Transformative (Sponsored), guest Simon compares DPUs, which can run network functions and typically have an ARM processor, to installing early Linux from a bookshop disc. It was hard going until "Red Hat happened." Treat any product claims as the vendor's. How AI Raises the Stakes for Data Protection (Sponsored) leads naturally to the Cybersecurity page.

Designing for the person on the other side

Design Domination, hosted by Colleen Gratzer, makes accessibility part of the craft. In #1 Accessible Infographic Creator — With Eugene Woo, she tests Venngage's PDF export and notes that a document having tags does not mean they are the correct ones. Woo describes contrast checks built into the colour picker and a colour-blindness simulator. He calls AI-generated alt text a starting point that he expects to improve.

Professor Game Podcast, from Rob Alvarez, sits where product design meets psychology. Gamification Isn't About Games. It's About Motivation is a 19-minute explanation of motivational core drives, including scarcity, the pull of something you must wait for. Expect pitches for his consultancy.

My Chatbot Life, with Mary Kathryn Johnson, preserves the bot-building world of 2021. In How to Be Sure Your Bot Never Hiccups, Christoph says, "We haven't seen, till now, a chatbot that passes our GDPR tests." The Artificial Intelligence page picks up the thread.

Founders, markets and money

Shunya One, hosted by Shiladitya M., explains Indian tech through its founders. Its latest listed episode is from January 2023. In Able Joseph On Dating With A Purpose, the Aisle founder explains choosing live audio rooms because "we don't think Indians are open to the idea of video dating just yet." Promos for other shows interrupt mid-episode.

Bitrefill's To the Moon Podcast is a company's own show, and a guest thanks the company. In Living on Bitcoin as a Bitcoin Miner - An Interview with Gerson Martinez, the guest describes daily tax-software syncing to track the cost basis of mined bitcoin. See the Blockchain & Cryptocurrency page for more.

The feed titled Thrum.gg: Discover Games, Music and Videos Instantly in WhatsApp actually carries Game Consultant, a 2020 games-business show. In Episode 41; Second Part Interview Ivan Filletti On GamingMalta And Timothy Bendt Explains Tamatem Games, A Publising house In The Middle East, Tim describes flipping menus right-to-left and adapting artwork for Arabic players. The Gaming page continues from there.
