Strength for the body, mind, heart and spirit.

The gist

A personal-training podcast that treats strength as a whole-life project rather than a gym metric. Jim Burns moves between deadlift form, cortisol and stress, blue-zone eating habits, and the ordinary business of being a kinder, steadier person.

About Be Simply Fit

The show opens the same way most weeks. Jim Burns says hello, gives his credentials — certified personal trainer, senior fitness specialist, silver sneakers instructor — and invites listeners to grab a beverage and get comfortable. Then he talks. The organizing idea is that fitness has four dimensions, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, an idea he credits to Stephen Covey and has been applying for many years. His claim is that people who are sound in all four are less bitter and treat others better. That belief is not incidental. The podcast grew out of an anti-bullying program, and Burns says outright that the switch happened because certain things have to go right in a person's life before they stop giving others a hard time. The fitness content is real and specific. A deadlift episode walks through rolling the shoulders back, tightening the core and keeping the spine straight, then argues the payoff in ordinary terms: picking up a box, lifting a child off the ground, carrying groceries. Functional strength, he says, is what keeps people from getting injured outside the gym. He also links posture to bearing — hunched over screens all day, versus leading with the hips and looking like someone who feels good. On stress, he gets into cortisol as a fat-forming hormone and exercise as the lever that lowers it, along with the accomplishment of one extra repetition or a slightly longer walk. He is direct about blood pressure, including taking prescribed medication faithfully and going to a doctor. A blue-zone episode covers plant-based eating and stress management through slow breathing, music, meditation and time outdoors, but he refuses to be a scold about it — anything in moderation, he says, including a hot dog at a ballgame you have attended for fifty years. Guests appear. One conversation with Forrest Bronzen turns to phones in schools, the difficulty of writing a policy, parents who push back, and the four kids in a class of thirty whose enforcement disrupts everyone else. Separately, the feed carries course-style episodes, presented as PodCourses with downloadable lecture notes, including Stress Management Through a Balanced Life. Personal detail surfaces without ceremony. He mentions turning 70, a quadruple bypass, being in New Jersey as the weather warms, a recommendation he made to his wife while they were watching something about the blue zones. He also reacts to the news, including violence at a Super Bowl parade, and reads it back through the same lens of people who lack balance in their lives. The pacing is unhurried and sometimes circles back on itself, the way real conversation does. An episode closes with a small benediction: eat well, sleep well, speak well, be well.

Made for: Adults, particularly older adults and anyone returning to exercise after a health scare, who want practical training guidance without gym-bro intensity. It also suits listeners drawn to the character-and-kindness side of wellness, including educators and parents thinking about school culture.

What sets it apart: Most training podcasts stop at the body; this one runs form cues, cortisol, blue-zone habits and classroom bullying through a single four-part framework. Burns hosts it as a 70-year-old who has had heart surgery and says openly he is learning alongside everyone else.

In their own words

Being simply fit involves more than than the physical component, we all need to be fit mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well. Those who are have a better outlook on life and are more apt to treat others with kindness and respect. Secondly those who are fit in the four areas mentioned have a much higher self esteem and love themselves. Those who love themselves love others much more freely.
