Some great New Release Reviews podcasts to get to know
The best new-release review shows answer Friday's question first: is this worth your evening, and why? The good ones keep going after that. They talk about the performance that surprised them, the ending that fell flat, and the trailer that promised a different film. The audience for podcasts is wide: Edison Research reported in March 2026 that 58% of Americans aged 12 and over had consumed a podcast in the preceding month. What listeners want from film talk is less settled. In an August 2026 r/movies thread, one listener asked for current-film reviews without the awards emphasis. Meanwhile an older argument continues between listeners who want the verdict fast and those who come for the company.
The spoiler line
The Drama tested some shows' spoiler policies this spring. Breakfast All Day movie reviews, with longtime critics Christy Lemire and Alonso Duralde, reviewed it spoiler-free in Episode 592: The Drama, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reviews, a 26-minute episode, and promised a live conversation for people who had seen it. Episode 594: Outcome review, The Drama LIVE Spoiler Chat delivered on that promise, asking whether the film's central confession matters less than how the characters respond to it.
Critically Acclaimed Network, run by critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold, approached the same problem differently in Critically Acclaimed #363 | The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, The Serpent's Skin, Forbidden Fruits, The Drama. They changed their usual running order because the marketing had hidden the film's first real plot point. One host's view of treating that as a spoiler: "Personally, I think that's kind of bullshit."
Beware of Spoilers reads release-week signals here as well. In Milly Alcock Carries Supergirl Across the Finish Line, the host says a review embargo lifted just before release tends to be "kind of a red flag." He still lands on "a quintessential, like, four out of five," which might drop depending on the day.
Rituals and scorecards
Some shows earn trust through a shape you can learn. In Is Project Hail Mary Actually a Masterpiece? (Review w/ Jake), THE MOVIE-VERSE hosts Ben and Kendrick set out theirs:
- what they liked, what they were mixed on, and what they didn't like
- scores from each host
- a ranking on the year
- a final ruling on whether the film belongs in the movie multiverse or on a forgotten timeline
A+Z Movie Review Podcast works in thumbs and in a concession-stand segment, with candy for something they liked and popcorn for something they didn't. In Episode 42 - The Brutalist - 2025 Best Picture Nominee, one host gives the film a sideways thumb because of the time it demands. The other defends the length as purposeful: "It is long because it is luxuriating in the space."
After The Show Movie Podcast, made by a British husband and American wife, reads the official synopsis aloud and then argues with it in this review. In Episode 933 - We Bury the Dead Review, the box copy promises that the dead hunt. The reply comes at once: "That's not accurate."
The long sit
The Obsessive Viewer - Movie Review Podcast pairs a feature review with a secondary one and brings in fellow critics in these episodes. OV485 - The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) & Together (2025) - Guest: Brent Leuthold runs 110 minutes. It covers movie news first, then a non-spoiler review, then a spoiler review, with a trailer clip marking the line between the two. In OV497 - The Long Walk (2025) & The Plague (2025) - Guest: Joe Shearer, the host admits that across his own lengthy walk-along project on the book, he never noticed it was "somewhat of an allegory to Vietnam."
The Big Picture, with Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins, brings the industry into the conversation. Paramount Wins Warner Bros. Now What? Plus: ‘Scream 7,’ Heat 2,’ and ‘Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie’ With Matt Johnson! runs 132 minutes and states early that "There was no good outcome in this." The show's Mario review gets personal. One host, who saw it sitting next to his child, found it "creatively and aesthetically bankrupt."
Perspective and punchlines
Black Men Can't Jump [In Hollywood], hosted by Jonathan Braylock, Jerah Milligan and James III, reviews films with leading actors of color in the context of Hollywood's diversity problems. In The Drama, the hosts' talk about the film's flashbacks leads to John Boyega's recollection of a Star Wars campaign. As the hosts recount it, the campaign sold a Black character becoming a Jedi, and the film never let him do it.
Double Toasted Podcast reaches clear verdicts with jokes along the way. Its Super Mario Galaxy review insists "Bowser's the only one with real depth in this movie." Its Project Hail Mary review warns that, for some viewers, what you expect from the trailer might shape what you get from the film.
Horror, and further afield
Duane Miller's Cinemania World Podcast includes a horror strand. Undertone - Nightmares Review! gives a spoiler warning before its third-act discussion. Scream 7 - Cinemania Nightmares Spoiler Discussion! spends 83 minutes on the franchise. The Horror Film Reviews page continues down that road. The Classic & Cult Films page suits listeners whose interest runs to older films. The Film Reviews guide and the TV & Film category guide map the wider field.
