Listening guide

A listener's guide to Educational Leadership podcasts

The hardest parts of running a school rarely appear in the job description. A teacher leaves a feedback conversation unsure whether she was praised or warned. A team agrees on a plan, and nobody checks whether it happened. A principal arrives on Monday after a terrible weekend and must decide whether the work is a weight or a refuge. The best educational leadership podcasts live in those moments and treat them as craft: things you can name, rehearse and argue over with a colleague.

The range is wider than "advice for principals" suggests. Some shows are two administrators thinking aloud. Some are built around one framework, some carry a microphone onto a conference floor, and one hands it to students. The arguments are live. In May 2026, Education Week reported a survey, conducted in summer 2025, in which 47% of educators surveyed expected AI to harm teaching and learning over five years and 43% expected it to help. In September 2026, ISTE announced IdeaSpark, a podcast framing AI around preserving human connection. Underneath runs a quieter dispute over whether a tip you can use tomorrow is worth much without the reasoning that makes it work.

Counsel from the principal's office

Principal Matters: The School Leader's Podcast with William D. Parker is where experienced administrators talk as peers. In MONDAY MATTERS with Jen Schwanke and Will Parker – The Expectation Conversation, Schwanke suggests questions. Among them: does the district have unwritten rules, and what would a win look like six months on? Parker answers with a story about a principal who warned him she would fall apart if a boy cried during discipline, so he should step in. It is funny, and it is also the lesson.

In MONDAY MATTERS with Jen Schwanke and Will Parker – Getting Through Hard Times, Schwanke calls her work and colleagues "a very safe place to fall" on a dark day. She also says, "I'm not saying this works for everyone at all." That qualifier is why the show earns trust. The guest episode goes further into method. PMP494: Rethinking Walkthroughs with Mark Shellinger takes apart the habit of cushioning criticism with a compliment, arguing that teachers stop believing the compliment. It also describes a walkthrough in which the principal asks to be put to work as the teacher's assistant.

Urban Principal: Leadership Lessons has a single voice working through a book. In the Schmoker with the Knockout! series, the host reads from Mike Schmoker's Results Now 2.0 citation by citation, pausing to set it against his own experience starting a focus school. Schmoker with the Knockout! Pt. II stacks figures on college remediation and stalled reading performance, some tagged with their sources. Later it turns to the action questions for leaders, beginning with whether every course has a coherent, literacy-rich curriculum. The weighing is left to you.

Bell 2 Bell With the Doc still carries its From the Principal's Desk conversations, in which Dennis Wilds and Chris Sharp swap notes from their own buildings in 2020. In From the Principal's Desk Ep.9- Dangers of Data, one host recalls drifting from running by feel to GPS watches and power meters. The conversation turns that into a warning against reading one weak benchmark as proof that a teacher isn't following the curriculum. Building the team around the leader

Leading Collaborative Response shifts the question from a leader's judgment to the structures around it. Kurtis and Lorna Hewson host it around a single framework, Collaborative Response, and the feed promotes their retreat, so expect advocacy alongside the advice. The advice itself is concrete. SUNDAY REWIND - Ensuring Follow-Up for Actions Determined in the Collaborative Team Meeting spends 26 minutes on what happens after a meeting ends. One tool is a column in the notes naming who checks in on each action. It also suggests the check-in come from someone who already uses that strategy well, a visual schedule being the example.

In the 59-minute How Elk Island Public Schools Uses Collaborative Response to Align System & School Supports - 2026 RETREAT BONUS, the interview stops to ask what a team's opening celebrations actually sound like. The answer is a chosen norm, then six minutes of celebrations on a timer, which is detail you can borrow. When guests complete the sentence "As a result of collaborative response...", hear it as testimony from people doing the work rather than an independent evaluation.

Dr. Kim Moore's Educational Leadership Moment takes on district-sized problems in recent episodes such as [ELM#1128] How to Actually Lower Chronic Absenteeism and [ELM#1133] Fixing Special Education Timelines Without Overloading Staff. Her feed also carries her guest spots on other shows. In Make Work Better Podcast Guest Dr. Kim D. Moore, she names her biggest leadership lesson as "Over communicate," and says she talks with custodial and food service staff when she visits schools. The Professional Development page and the Teaching Methods page pick up these threads.

The leader as a person

Some shows begin from the idea that a depleted leader decides badly. The Empowered Principal® Podcast is hosted by certified life coach Angela Kelly. In Overcome Childlike Energy and Step into Mature Empowerment, she names the "child energy" of someone stepping from teacher leadership into administration. She also describes an "identity quake," the moment a situation shakes a leader who had felt secure. It is a coach's vocabulary, and it helps most if it fits how you already think.

CheckBox Pro Series, from founder Missy Couch, speaks to charter school leaders and keeps life in the frame. In 50: The Power of Words, Dr. James Mosley describes answering to both a public board and a private one. His school is private Christian through fifth grade and public charter from sixth, and he splits his week between office days and coaching days in classrooms. When he praises Couch, she deadpans, "And listeners just know that I paid him to say that." Her solo 48: What's Saving My Life: Winter 2026 is a quarterly reflection that includes a digital calendar's chore function for her five- and seven-year-old.

Looking past the building

Trending In Ed with Mike Palmer widens the frame to conferences, technology and higher education. In MARCH MADNESS OF LEARNING LIVE FROM SXSW EDU with AJ Gutierrez, Jasmine Maze, and Justin Serrano, four people on a stage build a sweet 16 bracket of learning trends. One panelist argues that efficiency in education should mean more time for "the human work." In LIVE from ASU+GSV with Jeremy Singer, President of the College Board, Singer offers a useful admission: "I don't think anyone knows where AI is going to lead us." That thread continues on the Educational Technology page. For campus leadership, Crisis and Issues Management in Higher Ed with Jeff Hunt, Founder of Legend Labs points toward the Higher Education page.

Game Changers, hosted by Professor Phil Cummins, has recently given some guests three parts each. In Series 18 Episode 210 Ross Featherston & Dr Ray Swann (Part 3): Sacred and Profane, the pair discuss positive masculinity at Brighton Grammar School. They describe a program in development, Theory of Dangerous Ideas, where students play with provocations in the manner of Geoffrey Robertson's Hypothetical. Featherston supplies the line to keep: "You can't be what you can't see."

Leadership from the student side

MAKING MEDIA turns the microphone around: students host live interviews from Australian schools. In IONA LIVE Interview with Student Leaders, student leaders weigh house mascots, from magpie and emu to black swan and pelican. They float an 80s disco theme for Athletics Day while insisting it is not confirmed. One reflects that at a new school, decisions made now could matter in a hundred years. The questions are simple and the answers unpolished, which is the appeal. The Education page maps the wider territory.
