About The Empowered Principal® Podcast
The Empowered Principal® Podcast is a coaching show for school principals, hosted by Certified Life Coach Angela Kelly. It rests on the idea that much of what makes the job hard happens inside the person doing it. The show belongs to the Education Podcast Network. Solo episodes usually start from a felt problem and follow it inward. In one, Kelly describes the 'bossy vibe' some leaders take on as a layer of protection, a way to stop people from offering feedback, critique or a different approach. As she frames it, the cost is empathy, because a leader who is guarded like that stops noticing when others feel dismissed. That episode, titled 'Overcome Childlike Energy and Step into Mature Empowerment', closes on the courage it takes to get back into alignment. Another solo episode takes up a question she says comes up often with clients: how to stay in your power. The list of things that upset a principal and sit outside their control is long and specific. It runs from people's words and actions to superintendents, district offices, families and events across the country. Kelly treats slipping in and out of that sense of agency as human rather than as failure. Not everything is interior. An episode on the movement of staff members lands squarely in HR season, naming retirements, leaves of absence, FMLA, resignations and the district protocols that let employees apply for a new position or campus. Guests bring other vocabularies into the room. The episode with Dr. Lisa Riegel explains perception with a banana pushed through a series of screens: it is still a banana on the other side, but no longer looks like one. From there the talk moves to empathy for people who are struggling, keeping a professional hat on, and the antecedent-behavior-consequence framing used in IEP meetings. Warren Buck's episode is practical in a different way. It turns to college admissions and the gap between an exciting campus tour and a school that actually fits the student, with personal essays and the Common App described as rare ways to stand out in a crowd of high scores. A conversation with Lori Woodley-Langendorff touches on how COVID showed that education need not look the way it always has, with children finding they could learn math online. The pacing is measured, and the warmth holds steady without turning slick. What a listener takes away is a set of names for vague discomfort: authority used as protection, perception bent by old associations, and a sense of power that comes and goes.
Made for: Suits a principal or other school leader who wants to work on how the job feels from the inside, especially one dealing with staffing changes, pressure from the district, or a habit of leading from behind a guarded, authoritative front.
What sets it apart: It treats principal problems, from staffing shuffles to defensive authority, as questions about the leader's inner state rather than purely as policy or systems puzzles. The solo coaching is paired with guests from areas like behavioral neuroscience, SEL and college admissions.
