Our guide

Album Reviews podcasts, explained

The best album podcasts make a running order sound like a series of decisions. Two friends discuss which song they would sacrifice. Three fans name their favourite three. A host stops on a bass tone and wonders aloud how anyone made it. The verdict matters less than the reasoning, and the reasoning is where these shows part ways.

What listeners argue about is temperament. In an August 2026 online thread about one review show, a listener welcomed hosts who disagree, while another found a host's dismissiveness alienating. Others weighed retrospectives of older albums against early reactions to new releases. Podcasting is not short of an audience: Edison Research's March 2026 presentation put monthly podcast consumption at 58% of Americans aged 12 and over, counting watching as well as listening. The Music Commentary guide and the Music category guide map the wider field. For debate beyond the album, try the Music Criticism & Discussion page.

When the review is a game

Scratch a Track: Music Review and Commentary Podcast hangs everything on one question: which track would you scratch off the disc? In Why do people hate ONE HOT MINUTE by the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS? one host argues the record is something of a hidden treasure. He thinks it gets a bad rap because of the lineup change that brought in Dave Navarro. Their Radiohead - Hail to the Thief - Album Review Podcast is looser and more musical. One host speculates that a bass might have been driving a synth to produce its fuzz, the kind of guess that sends you back to your headphones.

My Brother is a Hipster turns the stakes into a family feud. Mike, the resident hipster, picks an influential indie album, and his brothers Steven and David review it. Trivia decides the next pick: near the end of Kings of Leon-Aha Shake Heartbreak (2005), David's win sets up Death Grips. It is profane and easily derailed. The Front Bottoms episode stalls on a fight about a review site that makes you count its stars. Yet the friction can produce criticism. In Mac Demarco-Salad Days (2014), what one host hears as mistakes prompts his thought that they may be the charm of a self-produced bedroom album.

Polyphonic Press - Classic Album Reviews leaves the choosing to chance: Jeremy Boyd and Jon VanDyk draw from 1,000 essential albums by random generator. At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band: A Masterclass in Live Improvisation wanders usefully into why brass cuts through even loud guitars in a mix. It also catches Butch Trucks on timpani at the end of "Whipping Post".

Dorney's Vinyl: A Classic Album Podcast is the tidiest of the lot. Its host ranks the songs on classic rock albums and reads period reviews from Cashbox and Record World beside his own reactions. His candour is the appeal. On The Rolling Stones' "Tattoo You" he admits, "I don't really know what reverb is, but it kind of sounded like reverb."

Fans who keep score

Pop Girlies brings stan loyalties to the table. Drew, Maria and Levi take a different album each week and name a "holy trinity" of favourite tracks. The judgments are specific. In Episode #85: Middle of Nowhere by Kacey Musgraves one host finds the record "a little bit aimless" and another warms to it after repeated plays. Maria's seven, given after a single listen, surprises one host. In Episode #80: Art Angels by Grimes the advice is to use good headphones to follow where the vocal sits in the mix. Some episodes take detours early on, into pomegranates or Oscar season.

The Truly Daebak Show - K-Pop & Korean Culture Podcast brings the same fan intimacy to K-pop. Its hosts review IU's fifth album, which they believe is her first full album since Palette. For scenes rather than single records, the Genre & Scene Deep-Dives page is the next stop.

Lore, liner notes and the long view

Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour covers single albums and whole discographies, and it is strongest when history becomes audible. In Steve Albini's Favorite Noise Band | Ep. 249: Zeni Geva, guest Tabata recalls Albini repairing a flubbed drum fill by cutting tape and splicing in another fill from the same song. On Amebix, the host describes the silence after "Winter" abruptly stops, before the singer cries out the word. He is disarming about motive. He says he covers Squirrel Bait because, despite loving Slint since he was 13, he feels "like a gigantic phony."

Dig Me Out: 90s & 00s Rock, with Jay and Tim, listens hardest to structure. In Jewel - Pieces Of You | 90s Album Review the hosts question the record's length and imagine giving each song its own instrument, pedal steel here, accordion there. Jay's verdict on Hawksley Workman is "a worthy album" that editing could improve.

Combing the Stacks is the marathon option. John, Josh and Matt pair a singles countdown with album reviews. S5 E10- Top Albums of the 2000s - Capdown/The Delgados/Erykah Badu 2/Queens of the Stone Age runs 119 minutes and includes a reading of Erykah Badu's "Booty" that hears her recasting objectification in food and music language. Faced with an ambient GAS record in another episode, one host confesses, "I am not fully sure that this is like totally music as I understand music."
