Watch With Jen™

Watch With Jen is a film conversation show hosted by Jen Johans of FilmIntuition.com. The format almost never varies. One or two guests, one subject, and as much time as the subject needs. Guests are writers, critics, novelists and podcasters, and a striking number of them are people Jen has known since roughly 2009 or 2010, back in what one episode calls the blog days. That shared history changes the temperature of the talk. These are not interviews so much as catch-ups with a topic attached. Season seven opened with author Duane Swierczynski on John Carpenter, a discussion that gets down to the mechanics of misdirection and why a well-placed jump scare still lands on a repeat viewing. A later episode gathered critic Sean Burns and writer S.A. Cosby to make the case for Delroy Lindo, including the honest observation that a great character actor is often the best thing in a bad movie. Novelist and former fashion editor Amina Akhtar took on The Devil Wears Prada, bringing two decades of New York and fashion-industry experience to a film about exactly that world. Candice Frederick came on for coming-of-age movies, which turned into a conversation about childhood independence, latchkey kids and how much parents actually knew about where anyone was at nine o'clock at night. Brian Saur, co-host of Pure Cinema, arrived to dig through forgotten film noir. Laurel Hightower joined for Disney, where the most memorable stretch belongs to a child asking why every story ends in marriage and getting a straight answer about it. That is the show's habit in miniature. A canonical topic gets approached from a side door, through memory, family, work history or a stray line delivery someone cannot stop thinking about. Jen keeps the frame steady and lets guests talk, offering context on credits and careers without turning the episode into a lecture. The tone stays generous. Even the criticism lands as affection with a clear eye. Recommendations accumulate naturally rather than arriving as a list, which is the point: the show works like a knowledgeable clerk pointing at a shelf. Episodes end with the same quiet ritual, a credit to the theme music and a sign-off wishing listeners happy movie watching. With seven seasons behind it, the archive is substantial and largely evergreen, since most subjects are filmmakers, performers and genres rather than new releases. Anyone building a watchlist will leave each episode with several additions.
