About This Week in Retro
This Week in Retro is built around the idea that old technology keeps making news. Its focus is vintage gaming and computing, but the show rarely treats those worlds as finished history. A week might bring a Unity plugin for the original PlayStation. Another might bring a LucasArts emulator update, a new board for old controllers, a rescued archive, or a revived operating system. The conversations are casual and often comic, with enough technical grounding to satisfy listeners who know their way around ports, adapters, and storage formats. It is also strongly shaped by community selection. Stories are suggested and voted on through the show's subreddit, which helps the agenda feel less like a press roundup and more like a regular club meeting for people who still use, repair, collect, emulate, and argue about older machines. The range is wide. Recent episodes have touched the Apple anniversary, Game Developers Conference 1989 recordings, MiniDV tape replacements, PicoGUS updates, mini CRT arcade cabinets, Iomega's Zip-era reputation, and campaigns around digital game preservation. There is room for practical hardware talk. There is room for cultural frustration about games that disappear after purchase. There is also room for jokes about show logistics, absent regulars, mugs, guests, and transportation stories. Guests such as Jeff Vogel, K Savitz, Adrian, Rhys, and Ron appear within the roundtable feel. The show is best when a small retro story opens into a larger question: who owns old software, how formats survive, why tools matter, and what happens when yesterday's expensive marvel becomes today's repair project. Its pace is friendly rather than polished to sterility. The appeal lies in that mix of current news, affectionate skepticism, technical curiosity, and shared memory. It is current affairs for people whose current affairs include Sound Blaster cards, Amigas, Macintoshes, arcade boards, and forgotten media.
Made for: For retro computing and vintage gaming fans who want current news with hardware detail, preservation context, and relaxed roundtable chemistry. It especially suits listeners who follow emulation, homebrew, repairs, old media formats, and community projects.
What sets it apart: The show treats retro technology as an active beat, with listener-voted stories and practical coverage of tools, boards, archives, and campaigns. Its strength is the blend of hobbyist specificity, light banter, and recurring attention to what keeps old systems usable now.
