About Pressing The Limits Podcast
Pressing The Limits Podcast is Jon Bruney's interview show, and the people he talks with come from the specialist corners of strength culture: coaches, a grip athlete, a former Olympian, two guests who want to fix the flat bench, and an MMA and pro wrestling legend. The format is simple. Bruney frames a topic, often through something from his own training, and the guest answers at whatever length the story needs. Those setups are frank about his mistakes. In the Geoff Neupert conversation, Bruney recalls doing a snatch test as a finisher five days a week and chasing the feeling of being fried, a habit he now calls overkill. With Brett Jones, StrongFirst's director of education, he describes sprinting on an echo bike until he stopped recovering. He then asks Jones what StrongFirst is and what it is trying to do. The guests bring the texture. Dan Severn explains how he reads an opponent's damaged ear during the handshake to predict which leg is coming, and says a staggered fight stance tells him which way to move. He names his three most reliable training partners: a throw dummy, a wall-mounted dummy and a takedown machine. Jedd 'Napalm' Johnson, introduced as having some of the strongest hands on the planet, says grip trainees buy every piece of equipment but skip the instructional material, and he passes on a saying from his old friend Paul Knight: pennies make dollars. The grip talk also covers bending the bar to build tension on the bench and in pull-ups, and finger strength as protection when a ball comes off the fingertip. Andrew Harvot of Advanced Muscle Mechanics and Daniel Palacios of Kinetic Training argue that the bench has barely changed since its inception, and one of them bets that nine out of ten people pulled from a gym crowd have had shoulder pain. Neupert, introduced as an Olympic weightlifting champion who has coached Division I strength and conditioning, is asked how to train around or with an injury. The same episode compares the work to Indiana Jones blowing the dust off his book, applied to neural pathways that have gone unused. Mike Savitch, owner of The Conditioning Room, tells his story from the beginning: surfing parents on Saint Thomas and a Little League game that made him want to play baseball. His episode also includes the line that the barbell is not to be feared. The talk is loose and warm, with dry asides instead of pep talks, and the host stops to explain a term when it needs explaining. Sign-offs thank sponsor Zion Missionary Church and credit a production team that includes producer Drew Kiespert. Where to start depends on the listener: the Severn episode for combat, Johnson for grip, the bench episode for anyone with sore shoulders. What ties it all together is a steady interest in what actually works, and in what keeps a body able to train.
Made for: Suits a listener who already lifts, swings kettlebells or trains grip and wants unhurried, practical conversations with coaches about technique, recovery and training around injuries.
What sets it apart: The host brings his own training mistakes into the questions, then lets specialists in kettlebells, grip, bench design and MMA answer in depth. That keeps the talk practical and full of stories from the lifting room.
