The gist
Joshua Gibson talks weightlifting with athletes, coaches and returning regulars such as Max Aita and Seb Ostrowicz, covering training frequency, programming, and what it takes to reach the top of the sport. The surface is loose and full of running jokes, but the conversations keep coming back to practical questions a lifter can carry into the next session.

About Philosophical Weightlifting Podcast
Joshua Gibson hosts the Philosophical Weightlifting Podcast, a conversation show that describes its own purpose as critical thinking applied to strength training, nutrition, and well-being. The name promises philosophy. What the episodes actually sound like is a coach-room conversation, casual on top and analytical underneath. Guests come from across the weightlifting world, and several are clearly regulars: Max Aita returns on episodes billed as Training Talks, Seb Ostrowicz arrives with a running joke about microphone distance, and Jessie Stemo is welcomed back after a listener at a meet singled out the episodes featuring Stemo. One Aita conversation, 'Ep. 325: Training Talks w/Max Aita | High Frequency Training', makes a concrete case. The harder and more complex a lift is to execute, the argument goes, the more a higher training frequency tends to be justified. Light technical sessions such as tempo snatches or no-hook, no-feet work get credit for reinforcing the feel of a correct lift, and the deadlift serves as the contrast: a movement that can be practised well at moderate loads without being trained five days a week. That exchange shows the method. A principle gets tested against specific exercises until it becomes something a coach could actually program. Other episodes turn toward the athlete. In 'Ep. 323: Caden Cahoy | World Record Visions', the talk is framed around meeting the person behind the total, with Olympic gold as the distant goal and the road toward it as the real subject. 'Ep. 326: Celia Gold | The Mindset of an Elite Weightlifter' includes a stretch on coaching a super total athlete who powerlifts in the morning and weightlifts in the afternoon, and on narrowing that effort toward a national podium. Seb Ostrowicz's visit includes a catch-up about a 217.5-kilo squat Seb posted, which the host labels controversial. Jessie Stemo's appearance gives a snapshot of ordinary coaching weeks: writing programs, reviewing videos and checking in with lifters, with no big meets until finals in December. A run of titles fills in the rest of the range, from 'Ep. 308: Pulls vs Squats & Building a Career in Weightlifting | Jessie Stemo' to 'Ep. 322: Training Talks w/Max Aita | Training Principles Over Programming Noise' and 'Ep. 324: Seb Ostrowicz | Olivia Reeves, WLing's New Format, & Absurd Lifts'. The humour is dry and mostly self-directed. Gibson's self-introductions swing from 'well-fed host' to 'energetic host', and Aita answers a friendly welcome with complaints of back pain and mock despair about having gone weak. The jokes release pressure without replacing the analysis. A newcomer could start with the high-frequency episode for the coaching argument, or with the Cahoy conversation for a portrait of an athlete chasing the top of the sport.
Made for: Suits a listener who lifts or coaches in weightlifting and wants questions like training frequency, technique work and competition goals reasoned through out loud, with some dry banter along the way.
What sets it apart: It holds itself to a stated mission of critical thinking but stays anchored in coach-room specifics, so arguments about frequency, technique sessions and programming are worked through aloud, qualified and tested against real lifts rather than packaged as rules.
In their own words
Join me as I explore the minds of elite athletes, coaches, and experts in strength, power, and human performance. During these conversations, I often look for the intersection of philosophy, psychology, and well-being; a combination you've never seen before and will never hear again!
As heard by us
Based on 5 episodes we listened to · September 2026
Joshua Gibson turns weightlifting technique into a close study of coaching judgment, athlete trust, and the culture built around difficult practice.
Joshua Gibson keeps returning to the decisions behind a lift: how much practice builds technique, when training frequency helps, and what a coach should correct first.
Why you'd press play
Thirty technical reps, and your snatch session starts looking less like counting and more like learning.
Press play if you want
- a reason to use lighter snatch complexes beyond filling the training sheet
- a coach's eye for which bar-path problem deserves attention first
