About NZZ Geopolitik
NZZ Geopolitik is a German-language interview show for making world politics legible without making it simple. It usually begins with a scene: a football team covering its mouths, Netanyahu in a protective vest, a papal warning about New Start, a speech about military spending, or an oil emergency around Hormuz. Then the program slows the scene down. What institution is acting? Who has leverage? Which dependency has become visible? The recent run of episodes circles the Middle East, but it does not treat the region as an isolated drama. Israel’s strategy is placed beside Hezbollah, Lebanon, Trump, diplomacy, and military signaling. Iran appears through war costs, religious rhetoric, AI on the battlefield, oil routes, and Turkey’s attempt to stay balanced while remaining embedded in NATO security architecture. The show is especially good at turning moral shock into institutional mechanics. A conversation about Christian war language distinguishes just-war theology from a newer, more militant political rhetoric. A discussion of AI warfare moves from the speed of target selection to automation bias and the shrinking space for human judgment. An episode on U.S. war spending asks what is seen, what is hidden, and why defense jobs or innovation claims do not settle the economic argument. The style is measured. Questions are practical and skeptical, while expert answers are allowed to build in layers. The program is not trying to entertain through combativeness. Its tension comes from watching apparently separate forces connect: football governance, nuclear treaties, energy markets, religious narratives, missile defense, and the economic asymmetry of modern war. It suits listeners who can sit with uncertainty but still want a map. The recurring promise is not certainty. It is orientation.
Made for: For German-speaking listeners who want current geopolitical events explained through institutions, incentives, history, security policy, economics, and ideology. It suits people who prefer careful expert interviews to hot takes.
What sets it apart: The show’s strength is its systems-first framing: a headline becomes a question about treaties, supply chains, military doctrine, energy dependence, or institutional power. It gives expert reasoning time to develop without flattening conflict into slogans.
