About Der Pragmaticus Podcast

Der Pragmaticus Podcast is a German-language interview show for listeners who want public questions slowed down and made legible. It does not treat geopolitics, economics, science, or Austrian institutions as separate worlds. Instead, it follows the routes by which money, law, history, identity, and power meet ordinary consequences. An episode on China, for example, starts from futuristic cities, high-speed transport, solar technology, robotics, e-cars, and 5G, then turns toward the harder question of why such strength can coexist with industrial losses, weak growth, unemployment, and dependence on European markets. The result is less a forecast than a map of leverage. The Austrian health-system episode works in a similar way. It moves from waiting times and patient weakness into hospital financing, cash financing, federal competencies, bureaucratic hurdles, and the misleading simplicity of reform slogans. Neutrality is treated neither as sentimental folklore nor as a cheap target. The conversation asks why Austrians attach peace, safety, and specialness to it, while also testing the claim that neutrality itself can guarantee peace. Europe’s defense problem receives the same institutional attention. The discussion with Jana Puljerin is grave about Ukraine, the Middle East, NATO burdens, American priorities, and the need for Europe to think in strategies rather than inherited assumptions. The Hungary episode follows Viktor Orbán, Fidesz, Peter Magyar, TISA, and the European Union without flattening Hungarian politics into a simple moral split. It asks how resentment toward the West, economic calculation, nationalism, and anti-democratic measures can reinforce one another. The show is not only about crisis. Its Machthunger strand uses bread, cake, sourdough, Easter traditions, fermentation, and food customs as routes into culture and history. Alles außer Politik loosens the format further, while still keeping an argumentative spine, as Peter Vilsmeier’s conversation with Monika Langthaler turns sustainability, climate, and public skepticism into a structured exchange. Across the feed, the show’s signature is patience. Questions are plain, answers are allowed room, and abstract systems are brought back to concrete stakes. It suits listeners who like expertise without performance and analysis without theatrical certainty.

Made for: For German-speaking listeners who want sober, explanatory interviews on Europe, Austria, geopolitics, public systems, and culture. It especially suits people who prefer institutional context to quick opinion.

What sets it apart: The show’s edge is its steady movement from present-tense controversy into the machinery underneath: financing chains, constitutional habits, EU leverage, defense doctrine, food history, and political identity. It is broad, but rarely superficial.

In their own words

Press play if you want

  • to hear why a good sourdough loaf can take days, with a detour through bread's older meanings
  • to weigh China's technology lead against a guest's account of factory losses and job pressures
