Kitchen-table conversations that start with food and wander.
The gist
LIFE IS FOR COOKING, from Greenwich Pantry, starts with the practical side of home cooking: growing more food from scraps, going easy on tarragon, keeping a food diary to spot what bread does to digestion and mood. From there the conversations drift, unhurried, toward fathers, January pledges and how food makes a body feel.

About LIFE IS FOR COOKING
LIFE IS FOR COOKING is the podcast from Greenwich Pantry, and it treats cooking as a way into a conversation rather than the whole of it. Each talk begins somewhere ordinary: a herb, a vegetable, a glass of water. Then it takes its time. The format is interview-led, with guests carrying most of the information while the host keeps asking questions, echoing their ideas back in fuller language and tying them to everyday life at home. Episode titles group under seasonal headings, among them 'Food and Spring (1) Learning to reduce food waste.' and 'Food and Summer (12) Remembering water with Sukhi', and together they range across herbs, water, January pledges and cooking with dad. The practical material is modest and easy to use. In the herb conversation, tarragon comes up as a flavour so strong it can drown out everything else on the plate, angelica is steered toward baking and away from potatoes, and the question of starting a small windowsill herb garden gets raised. A January talk about pledges recommends purple sprouting broccoli, blanched briefly and cut into strips for a salad, while noting that most large supermarkets may not carry it. Linda approaches food waste from the growing side. Her point is that plenty of what gets thrown away could be grown into more food. That conversation also takes up the question of how quickly vegetables lose nutrients once they are pulled from the ground. Claire Thomas, a nutritional therapist from Nourish to Soar, speaks candidly about her own gluten intolerance and how too much of it lowers her mood and brings on anxiety and brain fog. Her first suggestion for anyone noticing similar signs is a food diary. She also mentions probiotic foods as general support for the gut. The widening out is the show's real signature. A conversation with Sukhi, who runs an ethical business built around water, arrives at a simple rule: eat whatever you want, but make it yourself, so that a homemade doughnut becomes a treat again. In the Father's Day episode, one memory involves a father who shopped at the market for some things and the supermarket for others, always squeezed the tomatoes, and lit a cigarette only when the smell of the fish upset him. The tomato squeezing, it turns out, has carried on into the next generation. Moments like the host thanking Claire Thomas for her openness, and observing that many people go through the same things without talking about it, set the gentle tone. For a first listen, the Father's Day conversation shows the show's warmth, and 'Why looking after your gut is important for mental health. A session with Claire Thomas' shows practical advice and personal honesty sitting side by side.
Made for: Suits a listener who wants small, usable kitchen tips, like how carefully to use tarragon or what to do with purple sprouting broccoli, and who enjoys hearing those tips wander into family memories and questions about wellbeing.
What sets it apart: Cooking is the way in rather than the whole subject. A talk about herbs, water or broccoli can widen into a father's shopping habits, the link between gut and mood, or the food pledges a household makes, all at an unhurried, kitchen-table pace.
