About Ballistic Strength Radio - Kettlebell Sport Podcast
Ballistic Strength Radio is an interview show about kettlebell sport and the gyms, coaches and lifters around it. Its questions are practical. How does the ranking system work, what does a judge do with a borderline rep, and when should a personal-training business start running group classes? The answers are allowed to wander through memory, lineage and side stories, and nobody rushes them. The result is measured and conversational, with a technical core. On the platform side, the Charlie Fornelli conversation starts from the sport's ranking system and ends somewhere more personal: what a lifter is chasing when the medal might only mean first place in a category of one. Along the way it makes a precise point about pacing. A lifter who knows ten minutes is in the bag can settle into the reps, while one unsure of the last two can watch a 120-rep goal turn into an 85-rep set-down. The Mike Sherman interview, arranged across time zones, includes a judge's account of giving five reps back to a lifter after deciding that heels rising in a jerk were not, on their own, a rule infraction. It then turns to the harder problem of staying impartial when you are friends with everybody. The Steve Cotter episode widens the lens. The questions put to the founder of the International Kettlebell and Fitness Federation ask whether an ordinary parent with a desk job really needs Olympic weightlifting or gymnastics, whether social media makes fitness out to be more than it is, and how people define themselves once their physical ability is gone. Other episodes stay close to Nanaimo. Adam Mackay, a local bodybuilder, coach and personal trainer who has recently taken up powerlifting, talks through the process of bodybuilding and the complexity of weight manipulation. The episode even promises to explain why he eats pizza from a blender. With Carlina, his co-founder at Loaded Movement Academy, he explains his wariness of group fitness: too many classes put thirty people and one instructor in front of complicated exercises, with little check on whether clients are ready. The pair also discuss how people's online self-presentation shapes what clients expect from the field. The tone turns grave for 'Health Education: Addiction and the Family', a presentation by Jim Edwards, a Nanaimo Kettlebell Club member who works as a social worker and counselor. He speaks from his own long-term recovery about denial, deceit and personality extremes, and sums up compulsion with the line that one is too many and a thousand is never enough. He closes warmly, on learning to value a morning walk in the woods and the people he works out with. Listeners who want the sport itself can start with the Fornelli conversation. For the gym-floor side, 'Who are the Loaded Movement Academy?' is the easiest way in.
Made for: Suits a listener who trains or competes in kettlebell sport and wants unhurried, technical conversation about rank, judging and coaching, and who is also glad to follow guests off the platform into bodybuilding, gym business and recovery.
What sets it apart: It pairs platform-level detail, like ranking and reversed judging calls, with voices from a Nanaimo gym community, so a club member's talk on addiction in the family sits alongside interviews with figures like IKFF founder Steve Cotter.
