What San Antonio sounds like on its podcasts

Most of what plays here is a Spurs argument in progress. A postgame voice on SSPN: A San Antonio Spurs Podcast works the box score after a 23 percent night from three and insists that one more make each from De'Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle would have changed the game. On Locked On Spurs - Daily Podcast On The San Antonio Spurs, Trevor calls the Portland series for San Antonio in five and says an undefeated February ended his doubts about whether the team was legitimate. Spurs Digest stops on a single stat: Victor Wembanyama now has the second-most games ever with 40-plus points in under 30 minutes, behind only Steph Curry. Wembanyama is the constant across all of it. Around that basketball core sit two morning talk-radio programs that spend most of their clips on Washington and Iran, and a smaller strand of interview shows where the city itself is the subject: school closures, foster-care outcomes, sister-city agreements, high school recruits. Other San Antonio teams barely surface; the only non-Spurs sports talk that plays here is a high school football preview.

What San Antonio is

San Antonio is a large city in south-central Texas and the seat of Bexar County, southwest of Austin. It is known for the Alamo, the River Walk, a heavy military presence and the NBA's Spurs, and it ranks among the most populous cities in the United States.

Spurs talk

The Spurs shows sound different from one another even when they are chewing on the same game. SSPN is the loosest. Its voice profile describes two knowledgeable fans thinking out loud, self-correcting and testing each other's points, and the clip bears that out: one host recites Fox at four for 13, Vassell at three for 10, Castle at five for 13, then catches himself with a warning about oversimplifying the box score before doing exactly that. The other clips are in the same register, rebounding, turnovers and a bad Castle game explaining a loss in Memphis, and Wembanyama averaging 27 points, 11 rebounds and almost four blocks over a stretch of the season. The title run is postgame recaps and live shows, with a detour to react to NBA expansion.

Locked On Spurs is where the postseason picture gets laid out. Its recent titles are almost entirely about the Portland series and what Wembanyama does to the Blazers' defense, with a SPURS SQUAD SHOW strand asking whether the Spurs damaged their own title path. The clips are prediction and adjustment: Trevor's five-game call, built on defense and Portland's limited offense; a conversation about how the Spurs have adjusted in back-to-back meetings during the season, which turns into calling this series Mitch Johnson's maiden voyage and pointing out that Sean Sweeney is right next to him; and a postcast on the finale in Denver, where San Antonio went eight minutes without scoring while the Nuggets ran off 22 straight points with Wembanyama out.

Spurs Digest is the most stat-driven and, by its own description, the most high-energy. Its titles give nothing away, "It just gets wilder by the day...", "This is hard to admit...", so the clips are the only guide to what is in them: the Wembanyama 40-point stat, delivered with a sports-picks sponsor read wedged in before the reveal; Denver and Oklahoma City resting stars in what the show calls a tank-a-thon that could reshape the Spurs' playoff path; and a stretch in which the Spurs signed Mason Plumlee, were frontrunners for Chris Middleton, and ran a win streak to 11.

Morning radio

Ware and Rima and KTSA Morning News with Trey Ware share a name in the title and a way of working: national politics is the main event. KTSA Morning News with Trey Ware is described as combative and openly pro-Trump, and its clips are Iran and immigration. Ware argues that the strikes destroyed the Isfahan, Natanz and Fordow facilities and explains why enriched uranium cannot simply be loaded onto a truck; J.D. Vance talks about a bunker-buster flying undetected from Missouri; Stephen Miller reads a Supreme Court ruling as permission to deport convicted criminals to any country that will take them. What makes it a San Antonio show is the furniture around the argument, all of it audible in one clip: a call-in number, a partly sunny forecast with a high in the low 90s, the KTSA call letters, and a Soldiers Angels appreciation drive running through July 4th.

Ware and Rima, whose episode titles are simply the day's date, runs on the same fuel. In its clips the hosts argue that Hunter Biden went to Cape Town to avoid child-support obligations and that Pope Leo picked the wrong side by criticizing Donald Trump but not Iran, and John Solomon says unnamed government men told him he was seeing only the tip of the iceberg. One clip catches the show's manner: a host explaining that he is not Catholic himself, though his wife and her family are, and that he respects the faith, before saying what he thinks of the pope anyway.

The city off the court

EN Depth describes itself as a behind-the-headlines look at San Antonio's most talked-about stories, and its title run backs that up: why the city's public schools are closing, the Suzanne Simpson murder case and domestic violence in San Antonio, TNA Wrestling's road to the city. The clip from the school-closures episode has closures described as something that can feel like the death of a community, with families dispersed across several campuses. The show's football preview is the most local sports talk on the page. A guest picks Smithson Valley to go deep again in Class 5A after a state-quarterfinal loss in which they were stopped about a yard short, walks through Freddie DuBose, a Texas commit who transferred from Clemens, tore his ACL against Reagan and came back to place third in the state 400-meter dash, and credits James Peoples' 1,900 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns with a recruiting surge.

Philanthropy SA Podcast is the civic register. Its voice profile calls it a relaxed conversation with a strong interviewer presence and room for guests to tell their own stories, and the language stays practical: origin stories, boards, funding, program design. The clips show the range. Armen Babajanian of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio says six former ambassadors live in the city, and talks about the Persian festival, greater SATX, Port San Antonio, and the Quebec City mayor signing a friendship agreement with San Antonio's. Jarrell Flowers of the Rise Collective and South Texas Alliance for Orphans lays out outcome percentages for youth aging out of foster care. Mark Larson of Early Matters describes a Texas childcare search tool, planned for June, that would combine options, subsidies and vacancies. The title run, Let Us Unite, Pay it Forward, Alamo City Arts, the McKenna Foundation, a state-of-the-sector conversation, shows a show working steadily through the city's nonprofit world one organization at a time.

Texas Business Minds is a statewide series whose titles are prefixed by city, and the San Antonio entries in its run are pointed: tariffs and the Texas economy, and developer Mike Yantis on why the Alamo City is struggling to stay affordable. The clips that play here are its Dallas and Houston conversations, a Recaro turnaround that grew the aircraft-seat supplier from about 450 to 550 employees, Chris Cassidy on the National Medal of Honor Museum, and a solar founder's fix for startup cash flow, but the method is the same throughout: one leader, and the decisions behind a company or project.

Where to start
