Our guide

Finding the right York show for you

Podcast coverage of York rarely attempts a grand tour. It arrives through specific doors: a Cold War bunker, a bridge legend, a theatre stage. That makes listening more piecemeal than comprehensive, but the strongest episodes have a useful sense of place.

There is also plenty of name confusion. Yorkshire, York County and venues in York all appear, while sustained treatment of the city itself is scarce. Choosing the right episode matters.

Beneath the city, then out into folklore

The clearest history-first listen comes from Speaking with Shadows. Vigilant State – York Cold War Bunker and the Royal Observer Corps puts one York site and the organisation associated with it at the centre of the episode. For a defined historical subject rather than York serving as scenery, this is the most direct option.

The Faerie Folk - Folklore, Myths and Legends from the U.K takes a narrower, more story-shaped route. North Yorkshire: The Lover's/Beggar's Bridge moves beyond the city name into North Yorkshire and a single named bridge. Start here if local legend appeals more than institutional history. The title promises a contained tale, which is useful when the wider podcast coverage is so scattered.

HistoryExtra podcast offers more depth as a history show, but not a dedicated York instalment. York is a passing presence in A new take on the battle of Hastings and How the Vikings pushed Anglo-Saxon England to the brink. Both signal broad arguments about England rather than a close study of York. They may suit listeners interested in the larger historical setting, but they are poor choices for a York-specific first listen.

When York becomes the stage

THE ADAM BUXTON PODCAST provides the warmest and least academic encounter. EP.254 - JESSICA KNAPPETT WITH MUSIC FROM DAUDI MATSIKO LIVE @ YORK THEATRE ROYAL, 2024 is a live conversation and music event at York Theatre Royal. The show’s usual manner is affectionate, digressive and playful, with framing that can wander through jokes and cultural background before settling into the interview.

Here, York is the venue rather than the topic. That distinction is worth making: the episode can give you the atmosphere of a cultural event taking place in the city, but it is not a history of the theatre or York itself. Choose it for company, comedy and live-room energy.

The wider names around York

ColdCaseDetective heads into Yorkshire through a grave, procedural interview. True Crime Interview with Retired Yorkshire Police Officer | Truth Behind The Yorkshire Ripper Case is explicitly built around a retired officer and the named case. The show generally favours chronological, carefully qualified narration, so this is the serious investigative option among the York-adjacent episodes. It concerns Yorkshire, however, rather than offering a history of the city.

CityCast points somewhere else again. CityCast Ep. 91: Alison Mallard - York County Voter Registration & Elections is about voter registration and elections in York County. It is practical civic coverage, with no promise of historical treatment. The episode is useful only if York County is the York you meant.

That ambiguity explains much of the listening experience. A search for York can quickly move from a bunker to North Yorkshire folklore, then into regional true crime or county elections. The direct material is thin. What works best is selecting one sharply bounded episode rather than expecting a single show to tell York’s whole story.

Where to start

Begin with Speaking with Shadows and Vigilant State – York Cold War Bunker and the Royal Observer Corps for the most clearly focused piece of York history.

For legend and landscape, follow it with The Faerie Folk - Folklore, Myths and Legends from the U.K and North Yorkshire: The Lover's/Beggar's Bridge.

If you would rather hear York as a living cultural setting, try THE ADAM BUXTON PODCAST’s EP.254 - JESSICA KNAPPETT WITH MUSIC FROM DAUDI MATSIKO LIVE @ YORK THEATRE ROYAL, 2024. ColdCaseDetective’s True Crime Interview with Retired Yorkshire Police Officer | Truth Behind The Yorkshire Ripper Case is the alternative for measured, case-led Yorkshire listening.
