What Xi Jinping podcasts actually cover
Most podcast coverage approaches Xi Jinping sideways, through China’s diplomacy, party politics, military affairs, or relations with other countries. Dedicated treatments are comparatively scarce. That makes the strongest episodes easy to identify, while many other appearances amount to passing mentions inside broader discussions of China.
The clearest introduction
For a direct, personality-centred starting point, Driving with Dunne has the most inviting premise: Who Is Xi Jinping And What Does He Want? Joseph Torigian, Author, The Party's Interests Come First. The title frames the episode around two useful questions rather than assuming the listener already has a settled view. It is the obvious first choice for anyone seeking a full conversation about Xi himself.
Diplomacy through a single event
UK Column Radio places Xi inside a specific encounter in Taiwan Opposition Leader meets Xi Jinping in China | Silk and Steel. The show’s style is long-form and institutionally sceptical, with argumentative transitions and room for digression. Expect a grave discussion aimed at listeners already comfortable following geopolitics without much hand-holding.
A narrower diplomatic brief comes from The Beijing Hour. General Secretary Xi Jinping stresses cooperation with Vietnam in Party-to-Party ties, modernization concentrates on an official meeting and its stated themes. It is a more useful choice for tracking how Xi appears in day-to-day international coverage than for understanding him in the round.
Power, personnel, and the party
Some of the more revealing listening is organised around institutions. ChinaPower offers the sharply focused Assessing the Scope and Impacts of Xi’s Military Purges. That episode title promises analysis of both the extent of the purges and their consequences, making it the strongest route here into questions of internal power.
Harvard Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies reaches nearby territory without putting Xi at the centre. Forecasting Personnel Changes at the 20th Party Congress, with Cheng Li approaches Chinese politics through personnel and party structure. Its other episodes range across governance, censorship, prosperity, and foreign relations, so Xi is more often part of the context than the declared subject.
The wider China conversation
Sinica Podcast is similarly indirect. Its long-form, expert-led interviews are designed for listeners who already know the basics and want policy analysis with room for qualification. Episodes such as "The China Debate We're Not Having" | Part 1: What China Wants and Lizzi Lee on Involution, Overcapacity, and China's Economic Model explore the larger political and economic questions around China; Xi may enter those conversations, but neither episode presents itself as a dedicated portrait.
That distinction matters. Plenty of current-affairs shows mention Xi while discussing trade, security, or conflict elsewhere. Those appearances may add context, but they are poor starting points if Xi is the reason you pressed play.
Where to start
Driving with Dunne offers the broadest direct introduction, making it the starting point. Choose ChinaPower for a focused discussion of military purges and their impact. UK Column Radio is the event-driven option, while The Beijing Hour offers the quickest route into official diplomatic coverage.
