Radio Comedy podcasts, explained
Rochester is asked where his brother is, and he answers, "He's in September." Jack Benny takes the bait, and the explanation arrives with perfect patience: "I was born in Rochester, and he was born in September." That exchange, from Jack Benny - Jack Gives a Halloween Party on Jack Benny - Nighttime Radio, shows radio comedy at full efficiency. Two voices and no pictures produce a misunderstanding that keeps paying out as long as the boss keeps asking. The same instinct drives a Dublin breakfast crew turning a Pixar title into a local accent, and an Adelaide panel deciding a tennis player's name belongs on a fantasy novel.
Radio comedy podcasts take shows built for a live slot into the on-demand world, and that move has started arguments. In March 2026, Audio Always announced commercial advertising and sponsorship for Elis James and John Robins from 7 April, while the BBC-platform versions would remain free of both. Individual listener reviews have split between complaints about loud ads and acceptance of them as the cost of a free show. In July 2026, Edison Research at SSRS reported that YouTube had overtaken Spotify as the UK's preferred podcast service, yet 87% of UK weekly podcast consumers reported listening to audio-only podcasts. On radio forums, some listeners ask whether filming audio programming undercuts its imaginative pull. Some argue that broadcast satire has turned predictable, and others answer by naming chairs and shows they still rate.
The shows below suit different appetites: a cast of recurring characters, morning crews that treat callers as cast, comedians working someone else's room, and a news station loosening its tie to look back on the week. Choose the company you want, and the rest follows.
The golden-age ensemble
Two feeds, Jack Benny - Nighttime Radio and Jack Benny - Golden Radio, carry the same variety programme. The pleasure in both is hearing a star lose exchanges on his own show. In Jack Benny - Jack Takes Inventory Of His Pantry And Has A Memory Loss, a pantry count climbs item by item to "Two thousand four hundred and fifty-six cans." Cans of what? "Just cans, Mr. Benny." Mel Blanc also phones, offering impressions of world politicians, and names Al Jolson as the fellow who just visited President Truman.
Illness becomes farce in Jack Benny - Jack Catches Cold At Dons House. The cough medicine is "Sixty percent alcohol," and a Mr. Billingsley turns up under the bed, looking for his cloud. Even the sponsor copy joins the act. In Jack Benny - From Terminal Island, a Grape Nuts Flakes pitch snags on Dennis, who wants to know, "Did you say you open it?" Jack gets his own shot at Phil, telling him one of his gags was "the first time a radio ever changed stations by itself."
Know what else shares the feed. In Jack Benny - Jack Tries To Relax At Home, from Jack Benny - Nighttime Radio, a contemporary Toyota spot runs straight into the period Lucky Strike announcement. If vintage rhythm and a recurring cast appeal, start here. If you want comedy in the present tense, the breakfast shows work from the morning's own material.
Breakfast radio, cut for replay
A morning show rebuilds its ensemble daily from whoever phones in. FM104's Strawberry Alarm Clock, with Jim Jim, Crossy and Zainab, is a music breakfast show with brisk segments. In IS THAT MY COAT?, a Pixar film called Gato gets repeated around the studio because it sounds like a fella from Dublin. Later, a coat-shopping story includes a stranger announcing "that's my coat." In HOT, COLD & FRISKING, a lament for a vanished bit of hip-hop slang gets its best line from an online thread read on air: "the shawties are aunties now." HANDBRAKES, HOLES & WIRES sets Sophie 10 questions in 60 seconds for 2000 euro, turning general knowledge into a sprint.
Triple M Breakfast with Roo, Ditts & Loz plays the same game for Adelaide, with more footy. In BEST OF| APRIL 2026 |PART 1, the producer, Jaz, reports that a player called Storm Hunter has won her first-round match. That starts a hunt for great names, until a text reveals Hunter is her married name and the maiden name was Sanders. The verdict: "She's upgraded." A caller then explains how they chipped a tooth. In FULL SHOW | Loz And Thommo Fill In| FRIDAY, fuel prices prompt a pun about Hormuz and crackers, and the room immediately reviews it: "Not sure how I falafel about that joke."
Sarge For Breakfast is gentler and more local. In BEST BITS: A Bloody Lovely Karen, a secret-sound contest is worth $1,150. Karen guesses a computer-screen button, misses, and is sent off as "one of the loveliest Karens I've met." In BEST BITS: What Does Robert Irwin, Lee Kernaghan & Sarge Have In Common?, Doug the Night Owl says he buys two Dagwood Dogs at the show every year, one for him and one for his late wife. Here the comedy is warmth with good timing. The Morning Shows page goes further, and the Pop Culture Comedy page suits listeners drawn to the Dublin crew's riffing.
Comedians in someone else's studio
Some breakfast shows borrow a comedian, and a guest working an unfamiliar room makes its own kind of comedy. Le 6/9 sur NRJ, with Béné, Jer'M and Tanguy, runs a Friday comedy club; in the 3 April episode, the hosts describe it as welcoming a Belgian comedian. In L'émission complète du 10/04/2026: On vous dévoile la playlist de ARTEMIS II !, Kostia, introduced as a comic trying his luck on radio, builds his set around the hosts. They are all parents, he notes, and would rather be at the microphone than at home shouting "Prends ton cartable" before school. L'émission complète du 03/04/2026: La voix de la SNCB, Béatrice Marlier, est notre invitée ce matin dans le 6/9! has the voice-over artist demonstrating how her delivery shifts from brand to brand. The show is in French, and its pace rewards listeners who can keep up.
The BOB & TOM Show Free Podcast offers the panel version. In B&T Extra: A Pat request, Vasectomy vs Colonoscopy, & Nipple rings, the room rereads the lyrics of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" with fresh suspicion and decides the singer at the window sounds like a peeping tom. One verdict: "I hope it's a safety glass." B&T Extra: Tom's Doghouse Construction turns a project into an inspection. The design came from the girls, it amounts to a box, and someone observes, "The dog doesn't care." Expect bluntness and adult material. The Stand-up Comedy page and the Comedy Interviews page follow these threads further.
The news station's lighter segment
The Hard Shoulder, presented by Ciara Kelly and Shane Coleman, is a drivetime current-affairs programme first. Minister Jack Chambers on new Summer Economic Statement spends 17 minutes pressing a minister on tax and spending. Winners and Sinners is where it loosens, a look back at the week "with just a few twists." In the 3 July 2026 edition, with Ger Gilroy and Niamh O'Reilly, a parent describes a squishy toy bursting on a long car journey. She had imagined the stuff inside must be gorgeous: "By and large, it isn't." The laughs come from a well-shaped anecdote, in a programme that can turn serious quickly, as the 24 July edition does over children on e-scooters. The Conversational Comedy page suits that taste. Readers following the satire argument from the top of this page can continue on the Satire page.

- For French speakers: Le 6/9 sur NRJ, L'émission complète du 10/04/2026: On vous dévoile la playlist de ARTEMIS II !. It mixes phone games with a comedian's set about parenting.

8 shows, described rather than listed
Each has a short write-up and a note on what it does best here.
Australian Mid North Coast morning show. Caller games, local references, running bits, and highlight-reel 'BEST BITS' edits. The corpus's most voice-profiled breakfast-radio entry.
The voice-profiled Jack Benny Program feed. NBC/CBS radio comedy from 1932–1955 — Benny's vanity-and-cheapness persona punctured by a recurring cast. Rapid-fire scripted comedy with remarkable timing.
Adelaide Triple M breakfast show with an AFL-adjacent frame. Loose multi-host banter, footy shorthand, and collective ribbing of everyday inconveniences.
Indianapolis comedy morning show running since 1983. Books working stand-up comedians as regular guests — explicit comedy premise rather than music-radio side effect.
Dublin FM104 morning show mixing Irish running bits, multi-host chaos, and international celebrity drop-ins. April 2026 episodes feature James McAvoy, Rege-Jean Page, and Halle Bailey.
Minneapolis CHR morning show clip feed. Drive-time relationship-drama stunts, caller comedy, and best-moments edits in the American format tradition.
Alternate Jack Benny Program archive feed with different episode selection. Covers the famous Benny–Fred Allen radio feud episodes and other catalog highlights.

Glossary
Terms worth knowing before you listen
The morning-drive-time broadcast format in which a team of hosts generates comedy through live banter, caller interaction, games, and stunts — distinct from scripted comedy programs. Commercial breakfast radio in Australia, Ireland, and the US runs on this format; the PlayNext slate includes examples from all three markets.
American broadcast radio programming from roughly 1920–1960, before television became dominant. Classic OTR comedy programs (Jack Benny, Burns and Allen, Fibber McGee and Molly) are now public-domain and distributed via podcast feeds. The Jack Benny Program ran on NBC and CBS from 1932 to 1955.
Podcast-distribution strategy common in commercial breakfast radio: the full live show airs on FM, and a shorter podcast feed publishes edited highlight clips from each session. Sarge For Breakfast and KDWB Clips both use this format.
Contemporary Hit Radio morning show — the format that dominates Top-40 commercial radio in the US. CHR morning shows combine music programming with comedy segments, listener games, and stunts. 101.3 KDWB is a Minneapolis CHR station.
A format endemic to the golden age of American radio: two competing programs and hosts mock each other on-air across shows, generating comedy from the feud itself. The Jack Benny–Fred Allen feud (running across their respective NBC programs) is the era's most famous example.
The stand-alone podcast segment series from The BOB & TOM Show, publishing short-form clips of stand-up comedian appearances, off-mic conversations, and stunt segments separate from the full daily show feed.
