Getting into Mumbai podcasts
Mumbai rarely stays in one podcast lane. The city appears as a political arena, a transport problem, the starting point of a creative career and the scene of a historical crisis. Only a handful of shows make Mumbai itself the sustained subject; elsewhere, it acts as the hinge in somebody’s journey. That makes the listening scattered, but usefully so.
The city as a system
For the clearest city-level treatment, start with The Flow of Urban Life. S2 : EP1 - How megacity Mumbai keeps people moving frames Mumbai through movement and infrastructure. It offers the most direct way to hear how the place functions rather than to hear about a single personality associated with it.
New Books in South Asian Studies approaches the city through scholarship. Its patient, interview-led style leaves room for argument, terminology and historical context, and Drama of Democracy: Political Representation in Mumbai makes political representation the organizing question. Choose this when you want a serious conversation that does not rush complexity into a few tidy conclusions.
Urban Warfare Project offers a sharply different route. The 2008 Mumbai Attacks is tightly focused by title and belongs to the show’s military-history coverage. It is an on-ramp for listeners seeking one grave, specific episode rather than a broad portrait of urban life.
Together, these shows supply the most substantial Mumbai listening: infrastructure, democracy and conflict. They do not combine into a single grand tour of the city. Each isolates one system or event and stays within its own specialist frame.
Mumbai inside the personal interview
Cyrus Says brings Mumbai into a much looser room. The show is fast, irreverent and comfortable with detours, so Riddhi Dogra on Mumbai, TV, Reality Shows, Asur, Jawan & Finding Freedom | Cyrus Says promises several overlapping subjects rather than a city explainer. Mumbai sits alongside television, reality shows, film and personal freedom. This is the conversational choice: personality first, clean topic boundaries a distant second.
WORLDS LOCAL is also guest-forward, but its tone is warmer and more inquisitive. Amit Tandon: From New York to Mumbai - A Journey of Music, Fitness, and Advocacy | Podcast 🎙️Ep: 20 uses the move between two cities to structure a discussion spanning music, fitness and advocacy. Expect Mumbai to emerge through a life journey, with the host steering by curiosity instead of delivering a polished account of the place.
These interviews treat the city as lived context. They are better for hearing how Mumbai enters somebody’s story than for building a systematic understanding of Mumbai itself.
Departures, arrivals and creative trajectories
A recurring pattern is “from Mumbai to somewhere else.” The Indian Startup Show makes that route entrepreneurial and creative in From Mumbai to NYC: Leia Tyebjee on Building Pylot Studios, a global platform empowering emerging artists. The destination and the venture share the headline, so the useful question here is how a Mumbai-to-New York trajectory connects with building a platform for artists.
Eat Sleep Immerse Repeat takes a similar geographical arc into immersive media. From Mumbai to London with XR Filmmaker, Ajay Singh | #30 is the specialist pick for listeners whose interest lies in filmmaking and XR. Mumbai is the point of departure; the episode’s declared centre is the filmmaker and the move to London.
Keep it Humane travels from Mumbai to Montreal for a very different reason. Mumbai to Montreal: A Different Way to Understand Dogs (Episode 302) connects the two cities through animal welfare and ideas about understanding dogs. It is the most unusual entry here, and a useful reminder that Mumbai coverage often arrives through expertise that has little to do with conventional city reporting.
The limitation is plain: much of this listening is about people leaving Mumbai, arriving there or carrying it into another field. What those episodes can reveal about the city's meaning within an individual account does not amount to comprehensive coverage.
Where to start
Begin with The Flow of Urban Life and S2 : EP1 - How megacity Mumbai keeps people moving for the city in operation. Follow it with New Books in South Asian Studies and Drama of Democracy: Political Representation in Mumbai for the deeper political conversation.
For something more personal and unruly, try Cyrus Says with Riddhi Dogra on Mumbai, TV, Reality Shows, Asur, Jawan & Finding Freedom | Cyrus Says. If you prefer a tightly bounded historical subject, choose Urban Warfare Project and The 2008 Mumbai Attacks is the clearest route.
