What Mesopotamia podcasts actually cover

Coverage is thin, and the useful listening splits three ways: a book-led archaeological route, a serious modern-history episode, and a deluge-series treatment. Beyond those, Mesopotamia usually appears as background inside discussions of scripture, warfare, magic, or the ancient world rather than receiving sustained attention of its own.

The three direct treatments

New Books in Archaeology takes the most scholarly-looking route. John Blair, "Killing the Dead: Vampire Epidemics from Mesopotamia to the New World" (Princeton UP, 2025) places Mesopotamia at the beginning of a much wider study. The attraction here is the book’s unusual organizing idea: listeners approach the subject through a history of vampire epidemics rather than through a conventional survey.

Explaining History moves into a different period and a more overtly political register with Between Two Empires – The Arab Revolts Against the Ottomans in Mesopotamia. Published on July 15, 2026, it suits listeners who prefer long historical arguments that accumulate context and connect individual events to larger questions of empire. The show’s style is serious and discursive, with room for qualifications instead of tidy summary points.

The most plainly themed option is Jovan Hutton Pulitzer’s THE GREAT DELUGE SERIES: Mesopotamia. The title makes its frame clear, although there is little surrounding coverage here to indicate how deeply the episode develops it. Treat this as a distinct on-ramp rather than evidence of a larger Mesopotamia run.

Ancient history around the edges

Several history shows get close without putting Mesopotamia at the centre. Oldest Stories offers military material in The Composition of the Sargonid Army and The Environment in which the Assyrian Army Emerged. These are promising adjacent listens, but the episode titles make no broader claim to survey the place itself.

New Books in Archaeology also reaches nearby territory through Tiffany Earley-Spadoni, "Landscapes of Warfare: Urartu and Assyria in the Ancient Middle East" (UP of Colorado, 2025). Again, this is specialist terrain rather than a general introduction.

The Ancients mentions Mesopotamia within Adam and Eve. Its usual manner is warmer and more companionable: a guided historical conversation that welcomes questions about evidence and terminology. Here, though, Mesopotamia remains part of a wider subject rather than the headline.

Scripture rather than place

Religious coverage is broader still. Bible Stories for Kids Podcast uses a clear, child-oriented narrative style in The Book of Genesis | Bible Stories for Kids Podcast Super-Sized Episode. Fellowship Oshawa Sermons approaches related material through sermon titles such as Genesis 19 - Sodom & Gamorah (Jermaine Wall), while LCC: The Journey’s Obadiah 1 belongs to its conversational, verse-by-verse teaching format.

Those shows may suit listeners following biblical stories or pastoral interpretation. In each of these shows, Mesopotamia is a passing element inside a larger scriptural discussion; none is a dedicated Mesopotamian history podcast.

Where to start

Begin with New Books in Archaeology for the strangest and most bookish doorway: John Blair, "Killing the Dead: Vampire Epidemics from Mesopotamia to the New World" (Princeton UP, 2025). Choose Explaining History’s Between Two Empires – The Arab Revolts Against the Ottomans in Mesopotamia for a grave, expansive historical argument. For a deluge-focused treatment, try Jovan Hutton Pulitzer’s THE GREAT DELUGE SERIES: Mesopotamia. If military history is the draw, continue with Oldest Stories and The Environment in which the Assyrian Army Emerged.
