A field guide

A listener's guide to Home & Garden podcasts

A caller to The Lindus Construction Home Improvement Show has two sliding glass doors from the same manufacturer, in a house built in 2000. The one onto the patio still glides. The one onto the deck has turned stubborn in the past two years. Andy Lindus answers first with a question: does the deck door get used a lot more? That is good home and garden listening in miniature. You bring your own nagging problem, and someone asks for the details before offering a fix.

The shelf is wider than a toolbox. It holds home and garden radio from Minnesota, Florida, Cincinnati and Chattanooga, designers talking tile, a decluttering coach for people who don't enjoy cleaning, and two hosts who treat homemaking as an art. Some of it fixes things, and some of it keeps you company while you fold towels. The wider audience is large. Edison Research reported in March 2026 that 58% of Americans aged 12 and over had consumed a podcast in the previous month, although that figure covers podcasting in general and says nothing about this corner of it.

What listeners argue about is often geography. In a July 2026 Reddit thread about gardening podcasts, one gardener valued a show because its host gardens in the listener's own city. Design has its own quarrel. In a May 2026 Reddit thread on interior design, one commenter speculated that executives might use AI to cut paid work, while a self-described designer called it useful for iteration and client communication. Older splits run underneath both: budget fixes against aspirational rooms, and native-plant conviction against impatience with rigid planting rules.

When your house is the case study

On a call-in show, a stranger's problem turns into a principle you can use. In Kitchen Design Mistakes: Don't Let These Cost You Big Bucks!, from Around the House with Eric G®: Upgrade Your Home Like a Pro, certified kitchen designer Eric G. and former contractor John Dudley work down a top-ten list. The best stretch is about arithmetic. Veneer thickness can throw a long cabinet run off by three quarters of an inch, until cabinetry is heading into the hallway. Near the end, the episode names its own method: the installer's view set against the designer's. The jokes are broad (a wrongly sealed countertop becomes "Salami with varnish"), but they sit on top of real cost warnings.

The Lindus Construction Home Improvement Show is presented by Lindus Construction, and Andy Lindus speaks warmly of the company's own gutters, so weigh product talk accordingly. His case for permits is harder to dismiss. In Give Your Gutters Attention, Which Windows are Right for You, Keeping Water out of the Basement, he says that skipping one to save a couple of hundred dollars could cost him his licence.

Your Home Radio, with Sean Whitfield and realtor Blake Watson on 98.1 The Lake, sets Chattanooga house prices beside furnace talk. In Radio Show / Podcast – February 21, 2026, a heating and air guest explains that a new system may need a larger return to work properly, and that customers sometimes hear this as an upsell. The Money Pit Home Improvement Podcast is now an archive. 2026 Home Project Planning | Timeless Design Upgrades | Ultimate Home Maintenance Checklist is billed as its very last episode. In it, Leslie Segretti sets out a project order that she says Tom Kreitler, the longtime co-host whose memory she honours, spoke about often: safety first, efficiency second, maintenance third, beautifying last. The Home Improvement & DIY page goes further.

Designers thinking out loud

Design shows trade the caller's emergency for the professional's second thoughts. Home Design Chat with Nancy has a kitchen-upgrades episode built on caution with resale in mind. In Kitchen Upgrades wit the Worst ROI (Don't't Waste Your Money), Nancy Hugo recalls a client who wanted a steam oven and never learned to use it, and she argues for keeping the ladder out of the kitchen. In Zellige Tile Pros and Cons: What Every Homeowner Should Know First, her guest Gil Olacea, owner of Ceramica in Scottsdale, describes a small area of zellige laid in his showroom. After about six months he wanted it gone, but he left it in place as a demonstration: "Most of my clients said, Nope, we're convinced we're not going to do that." A failed sample persuades better than a mood board.

Dear Alice | Interior Design, from Jessica Bennett and Suzanne Hall of Alice Lane Interior Design, is quicker and more decided about looks. Overlooked Design Details: Front Doors & Flooring moves from side lights on new builds to briefing your architect, where "clarity is kindness". One note for anyone listening rather than watching: in Top 4 Color Blocking Combos That Always Work, the hosts recommend Spotify or YouTube so you can see their slides. An icy-blue rug under red, white-framed chairs is easier seen than described. The Interior Design & Decor page continues from here.

Clutter, chores and the hours left over

Organisation shows ask how to live in a house without losing the afternoon to it. The plainest example is podcasts Archives - Dana K. White: A Slob Comes Clean, aimed at people who don't love cleaning. In 506: Your Laundry Questions Answered, Dana K. White explains that the second laundry day, exactly a week after the first, is when you learn what a week of your family's laundry actually looks like. She also allows that listeners outside the US may have no dryer. 504: Hobbies: Time to Give vs Stolen Time belongs on any leisure list. She describes feeling that every hour spent on fun was stolen from her house, until daily dishes and a five-minute pickup opened up time in her day.

Homemaker Chic, with Shay and Angela, is looser company. Your Comments, Our Answers! | Season 27 runs 61 minutes. Between talk of cookies, spring dirt and secondhand shopping, one host reads out a critical note from a listener, Kelly, who argues that their philosophy leaves men out of homemaking. From here, the Home Organization & Decluttering page is the natural next step. The Food & Drink guide also fits this show, and after The Homemaker Who Travels | Season 27, so does the Travel guide. The Hobbies guide suits anyone persuaded by the point about stolen time.

The garden hour

Gardening radio is the most local listening here, which is what one gardener in that July thread valued. Better Lawns and Gardens, with Teresa Watkins on Florida's Talk and Entertainment Network, speaks to Florida yards. In Better Lawns and Gardens - Hour 1 FFL Nicki Munroe April 11, 2026, Nicki Munroe of the University of Florida Indian River County Extension office runs through the nine Florida-Friendly principles, beginning with "right plant, right place". She argues for watering deeply and less often over time. Callers supply the comedy. In Better Lawns and Gardens - Hour 1 Native Trees For Arbor Day April 18 2026, Gary in Palm Bay reports that "my magnolia tree is celebrating Arbor Day by trying to kill itself." Be aware that the second April 18 hour includes a glowing interview with a sponsor.

In The Garden with Ron Wilson, from 55KRC in Cincinnati, leans toward community. In Ron Wilson 12/20/2025 Hour 2, Rita points out that a Christmas rosemary dropping its needles has just given you dried rosemary. Later the hour turns to funding gardening for children. Flawns and more with Anthony Nied 12/13/2025 is a 21-minute primer on the flowering lawn, where low wildflowers grow among the grass for pollinators. Nied, calling from Eau Claire, credits Doug Tallamy's books. It is a mild-mannered way into the native-plant debate.

Plants matter indoors and on balconies too. In The Plant Daddies: Using Plants in Interior Design, from Dear Alice | Interior Design, guests Macy Luccarelli and Dane Jordan talk about styling plants, and one tells panicked owners that a plant which looks finished may still have months of life left in it. OH THATS RANDOM PODCAST, in Homes VS APT, tells renters to check with the apartment manager before putting plants out on a balcony. The Gardening & Outdoor Living page has more, and the Outdoor Activities guide sits next door.

Glossary

Speak the language

Shell repairs

Work on the outer envelope of a house — roof, siding, gutters, windows, and foundations — as distinct from interior finishes or systems.

ROI renovation

A home improvement framed around resale or rental return rather than personal comfort; kitchen and bathroom upgrades are the most-cited examples.

Space planning

The process of deciding how furniture, storage, and circulation paths fit within a room before specifying finishes or making purchases.

No-dig gardening

A low-disturbance growing method that builds soil health through surface compost layers rather than tilling, associated with Charles Dowding.

Successional colour

Planting strategy that staggers flowering times across a season so beds and borders have continuous colour from early spring through autumn.
