Your guide

Picking your next Catalonia podcast

Catalonia receives strikingly little coverage in podcasts. Only two shows put the place directly in an episode title, and neither attempts a broad cultural or historical survey. One approaches it through cooking and mushrooms; the other through an imaginative children’s story. Elsewhere, Catalonia appears incidentally inside episodes about Spain, Barcelona, and wider historical subjects.

That makes this a page of side doors rather than definitive guides. There are worthwhile entry points, but listeners seeking sustained treatment will need to accept some distance from the subject.

From the mushroom hunter’s kitchen

The clearest nonfiction choice comes from The Mushroom Hour Podcast. Ep. 182: The Mushroom Hunter's Kitchen & Inspiration from Catalonia (feat. Chad Hyatt) pairs Catalonia with culinary inspiration and a named guest. The title promises a focused connection, although its kitchen framing is narrower than a general introduction to the place.

At the opposite end of the dial, Maked Up Stories: Imaginative Kids Stories offers The Ice Cream Sisters of Catalonia. This is the fictional route: Catalonia enters through the premise of a children’s tale, with no suggestion that the episode is trying to explain the place itself.

History at the edges

Several history shows bring Catalonia into discussions whose real center lies elsewhere. Historias: The Spanish History Podcast ranges across The Rise of Modern Sport in Spain, The History of Wine in Spain, and Religious Minorities in the Medieval Crown of Aragon. Those subjects may provide useful surrounding context, but none of the titles signals a Catalonia-led episode.

Remember that caveat with Cambridge Modern History. Volume 04, The Thirty Years War. Its relevant appearances fall within 068 - Chapter XXII Spain and Spanish Italy under Philip III and IV by Martin Hume part 2, 069 - Chapter XXII Spain and Spanish Italy under Philip III and IV by Martin Hume part 3, and 070 - Chapter XXII Spain and Spanish Italy under Philip III and IV by Martin Hume part 4. This is serialized historical listening in which Catalonia is a passing presence, not the organizing subject.

Explaining History offers another Spain-centered route with The International Brigades and the fight for Spain. Its serious, discursive style suits listeners comfortable with long historical arguments, but the title gives no reason to expect concentrated coverage of Catalonia.

Barcelona as a practical entry point

For a contemporary, place-specific angle, Inside Study Abroad & Global Education comes closest through 053: Reimagining Study Abroad in Barcelona with Rich Kurtzman Part 1 [Throwback Series] and its continuation, 054: The 80/20 Rule of Study Abroad Programs with Rich Kurtzman Part 2. The emphasis is plainly study-abroad programming rather than Catalonia as a whole, yet this is still a more concrete on-ramp than an unrelated passing mention.

Where to start

Begin with The Mushroom Hour Podcast and Ep. 182: The Mushroom Hunter's Kitchen & Inspiration from Catalonia (feat. Chad Hyatt) for the strongest direct nonfiction connection. Choose Maked Up Stories: Imaginative Kids Stories and The Ice Cream Sisters of Catalonia for a playful fictional detour. For broader historical surroundings, try Historias: The Spanish History Podcast with Religious Minorities in the Medieval Crown of Aragon. If Barcelona and international education are the draw, start with 053: Reimagining Study Abroad in Barcelona with Rich Kurtzman Part 1 [Throwback Series].
