How Australian Rules Football podcasts differ, and which to try
After a two-point loss the drive home can go very quiet. Australian Rules football podcasts fill that gap in different ways. One will replay the last minute with a former player's eye. Another puts you among supporters angrier than you are. A third makes you laugh at your club before you feel ready to. The good ones do their job properly and let you know which job it is.
The range is wide. There are commercial radio panels cut into podcast feeds, two-person fan shows, comedians, a veteran scout's war stories, and a regional station covering finals in leagues the national media never mentions. Money is still arriving. In September 2026 a new commercial daily AFL feed launched across Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube, with 70 episodes planned before year's end.
Listeners are arguing about what they want. In September 2026 a forum poster praised a show that analyses both the games and the stories around them. Another complained about advertising and betting talk. Earlier in the year, one listener's relaxed banter was another's wall of in-jokes. Those tensions explain most of the choices below.
One tribunal, many microphones
In April 2026 the Zach Butters tribunal case ran through feed after feed. It turned on words umpire Nick Foote said he heard. Following it across shows is the quickest way to hear what each one is for.
Locked In with Kane Cornes treats it as a process story. In Locked In with Kane Cornes and Sam Edmund - Wednesday Full Show (15.04.26) the hosts work through the four-page reasons. One of them asks: "How can he 100% say I heard that word for word with all that going on?" A day earlier, in Locked In with Kane Cornes and Tom Morris - Tuesday Full Show (14.04.26), the show turns on its own host. Cornes recounts a $900 fine from 2009 for abusing umpires. Later the three umpires are named and he apologises. It is quick, pointed radio, and its willingness to laugh at its host makes the pointing easier to take.
The CreedCast hears the case as Port Adelaide supporters. In RD 6 SQUADS: vs Hawthorn PREVIEW + BUTTERS vs FOOT/AFL CONTINUES! one host says the process seemed "cobbled together". The hosts relay Matthew Richardson's press-conference view that the tribunal process needs reforming. The partisanship is open.
SEN SA Breakfast with Bicks & Walshy does the news job in Full Show | SEN SA Breakfast with Bicks and Walshy (16.04.26), reporting that Port would appeal the guilty verdict. JunkTime AFL podcast with Adam Rozenbachs and Michael Chamberlin, in Episode 477: Gather Round, 2026, turns the case into a long, profane list of everything Butters might have said. One host admits: "I haven't read the articles, just seen the headlines." So choose by need: procedure, loyalty, facts or relief.
Radio, folded into a feed
Several big feeds are repackaged broadcast radio, and the callers come with them. In THE ROUND THAT WAS... Round 6! (April 19, 2026), 3AW is Football takes calls after Melbourne beat Brisbane by two points. A caller wants to know whether he'd pick Dan McStay or Brodie Majerczyk in the schoolyard. He gets a considered answer about contracts and ages.
The same show is careful with uncertainty. In FULL REVIEW: The Hawks hold on in a thriller over Port Adelaide! (April 18, 2026) the panel discusses Caroline Wilson's report about Elijah Hollands and adds: "She admits that no one has confirmed it to her." AFL Nation's Round 6 - Extended Sunday Pre-Game Show (19.04.26) plays Carlton's Graeme Wright putting Hollands' care first.
AFL Nation is pre-game theatre. In Round 17 - Firday Night Pre-Game (Swans vs. Bulldogs), Ken Hinkley is asked how he'd react if a player left for money and answers: "No problem. I don't have a problem with that." The same pre-game carries a sponsored odds update, which matters if you'd rather avoid wagering talk. Other Podcasts, a SportFM feed, runs a calmer version. In The Tuesday Perspective - (14/04/2026) the host mixes Gather Round reflections with Geelong's Ian Nankervis previewing the Cats.
Wearing the scarf
Club shows offer company rather than balance, and the good ones admit it.
Crowvid - An Adelaide Crows Podcast titles episodes "The One Where…". In one, the hosts tally their Gather Round attendance and set a lock of the week. In The One Where We Gather Around Again + Something Special they hand the floor to Matt, the Saxman, who has news about playing before Thursday's game. A listener message read on air sums up the mood: "Being a crow supporter builds your character."
The CreedCast can be blunt. RD 4 SQUADS: Port Adelaide @ Richmond PREVIEW! (+ Media Circus Hits OVERDRIVE) includes the plea "don't bite on the rage bait". It can also be humane. Early in the round 6 preview the hosts pause for the Dawson family, and Jamie speaks about losing his own father in February. The show's recent episodes have turned to AFLW previews and reviews.
Blue Abroad runs as a live stream with a chat. Early in Blue Abroad Show | It's Time for AFL Opening Round 🔥 the host greets viewers in New Zealand, Thailand and the UK. Blue Abroad Show | Get Ready for Collingwood 😤 digs into the rivalry's origins and invites callers' memories.
Between the sticks pairs a Carlton supporter with a Collingwood one, so a result can have a winner and a sufferer in the room. Auscast Sport catches West Coast fans relearning victory. Back with a mighty bang marks a drought one host puts at "was it 308 days, something like that". A FLAG BY 2030? spends a long stretch on who can cover Fremantle's tall forwards. The same feed carries wrestling episodes, and the Wrestling page goes further.
Supporter culture beyond Melbourne shows up too. Breakfast with The Blues (29/8/2026), on Other Podcasts, belongs to the WA Blues supporter group, with a guard of honour to organise and Carlton coach Damien Truslove as a guest.
SEN Goulburn Valley 1260am covers the GVL and KDL with national-game seriousness. In Benalla's foundation laid in a promising start for the future (04.09.26) a Benalla Saints guest explains a plan to "get the experienced players that have the winning experience". The feed also carries racing previews and soccer calls, which the Horse Racing and Soccer pages cover.
Laughs, and an outsider's ear
The two comedians of JunkTime AFL podcast with Adam Rozenbachs and Michael Chamberlin spend early stretches of Episode 476: Round 4, 2026 on the Hawthorn–Geelong finish. Later they drift to Navy SEALs and players' partners, and the football survives. Zero Hanger AFL Podcast's THE HITOUT: Crazy AFL milestones + WORST footy cliches counts down its hosts' most hated phrases, with "we'll back our system" at number seven.
A Yank on the Footy is the warmest door for anyone arriving from elsewhere. Craig Wessels tips rounds with Myk Aussie. Late in 451 Rd 2 Tips w/ Myk Aussie of MykAussie.tv a slang quiz reveals that "flat chat" means extremely busy. In 473 - AFL Round 21 Tips w/ Myk Aussie Wessels is in Melbourne with his son and recommends the Shrine of Remembrance. The tips talk quotes betting lines elsewhere, and a betting-site ad sits early in that episode. Near the end of one episode he points struggling listeners to support numbers in the show notes. He mentions a fantasy ruck worry, too, which the Fantasy Sports page picks up.
The long memory
Some stories outlast the season. In Hangin' Out with DAVID DUNBAR: The James Bond of the AFL world, Zero Hanger AFL Podcast's guest recalls a punch that he thinks stopped "about two inches from your nose". He also explains his pro scouting years at Brisbane, when the club struggled to attract players.
Triple M Footy AFL News & Interviews gives Port Adelaide's past players room on its Power Hour. In POWER HOUR RND 17 | Norm Smith Medallist Byron Pickett & Champion Captain Matthew Primus, Pickett is asked about Eddie Betts' story of his family staying in Pickett's shed. He answers simply: "I don't really say much about it, but I, yeah, I do remember that."
The most unguarded conversation belongs to SEN SA Breakfast with Bicks & Walshy. In Full Show: Port's Joe Richards, Chad Townsend previews SOO, Seed opens up on his battles with concussion, Seeds premiership seeds & more | SEN SA Breakfast with Dan Menzel & Paul Seedsman (08.07.26), fill-in co-host Paul Seedsman describes his concussion treatment in his own words: "first six months, I just didn't sleep."
