How Animation podcasts differ, and which to try
The credits roll on a cartoon you have loved for thirty years, and a question arrives anyway: does it actually hold up? The best animation podcasts are built for that moment. They rewatch a Batman episode beat by beat, put a forgotten Mario cartoon on trial, or follow Walt Disney's love of trains all the way to a circus elephant. What you get is company that remembers the details you half-forgot and is happy to argue about them.
The range is wide. Some shows move through a single series in order. Some chase whatever aired last Saturday night. Others treat animation as working history, giving producers, animators and overseas studios their due. Most are funny, and many are proudly digressive. That is where listeners split: some want a relaxed hang, and others want the talk to stay on the screen.
The larger arguments are about the medium itself. In July 2026, The Atlantic reported concept artist Wesley Burt's argument that trained practitioners remain necessary as AI enters animation and visual-effects work. In March 2026, Edison Research reported that 57% of Americans aged 12 and over have both listened to and watched a podcast. Some of the shows below can be watched as well as heard.
Rewatching, one episode at a time
The rewatch is the backbone of the form, and Almost Got 'Im: A Batman The Animated Series podcast shows why. In Almost Got 'Im: A Batman The Animated Series Podcast Episode 52: The Demon's Quest 1 and 2, the hosts mark the end of what they call a "massive 60-episode first season." They celebrate with 105 minutes on Ra's al Ghul: comic history via Grant Morrison and Mark Waid, a mock news bulletin, and the Condiment King Awards. The puns come fast ("A feat of clay," one host offers), but the knowledge underneath is solid.
The best detour comes in Almost Got 'Im: A Batman The Animated Series Podcast Episode 47: The Laughing Fish. A long story about Jackie Gleason's lost Honeymooners episodes, including one where Ralph is supposed to film a live candy-bar commercial, lands eventually on the Joker's black-and-white fish commercial. It is the kind of connection you could never make alone on the couch.
The Superhero Show applies the same method to stranger material. Its hosts, Cassie, Mike and Ryan, spent a run of episodes on the 1990s Cadillacs and Dinosaurs cartoon. In Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: The Final Three Episodes - Departure, Duel, & Wild Fire!, one host admits to having "gone all the way up to mixed feelings." The pleasure is in the retelling. A crossbow shot ends up saving the man it was aimed at. A mystery reminds the hosts of a hypothetical Law and Order episode where the first dock worker questioned simply confesses. Expect profanity and running jokes. The send-off plan involves playing the arcade game with joysticks.
Readers who came to these cartoons through comics will find more on the Comic Books page. All Things Transformers works a nearby seam: its collector-heavy Beast Wars 30th Anniversary Blowout & Eric Siebenaler's Return! is mostly figures and comics, with the cartoon as the shared memory.
Two roads into Springfield
Talking Simpsons and Four Finger Discount (Simpsons Podcast) cover the same family in very different ways. Talking Simpsons, hosted by Bob Mackey and Henry Gilbert, works through the series chronologically with guests. Talking Simpsons - Midnight Rx With Luke Savage plays clips from the episode and then picks them apart, from Big Pharma's pitch to Lisa and Marge to a pedantic tangle over the name of a famous wooden plane. Its monthly Talk to the Audience?!? - March 2026 roams wider, through production orders, the end of Smiling Friends, and Pixar's Hoppers. Looking at that film's concept art, a host remarks that it "could have been an even better 2D movie."
Four Finger Discount (Simpsons Podcast), hosted by Brendan Dando and Guy Davis, is looser and more Australian. It runs episode reviews such as Million Dollar Maybe (S21E11) alongside a mailbag. The strongest case for it is The Mail Is Here! #07 - Simpsons predict Trump's death, most overrated episode, real-life Simpsons characters and more!. In that episode the hosts take apart a viral AI video passed off as an unaired episode: "It looks nothing like a Simpsons episode." They count the clues, including one scene with about a dozen Homers, one missing an eye. It is a sharp, practical lesson in how fakes travel. The trade-off is long tangents, including a debate over what goes on a burger "with the lot."
Keeping up with what aired this week
Not every show looks back. Last Week On..., hosted by Adam Straughan with rotating guests, took on Invincible season 4 episode by episode. INVINCIBLE - Season 4 Episode 8 - Don't Leave Me Hanging Here shows the method: each guest is asked for a favourite scene and a prediction for the next season, and the conversation keeps checking the show against the comics. It assumes you have seen the episode, so watch first. The TV Recaps page has more in this vein.
Toonami Faithful Podcast is built around the Toonami block on Adult Swim. Early in Episode 549 - That's So Metal, the panel lays out the new Saturday lineup slot by slot before recapping Blue Lock and Tokyo Revengers. Its candour is the draw. One panelist cannot get into Blue Lock and asks for a defender: "I also want someone who really likes this show to come on and tell us what they love about it." Listeners can join the Twitch livestream or hear it later.
Boring Conversation Anyway - A Star Wars Podcast reaches animation from the Star Wars side. After an early detour about hauling mulch, Episode 290 - Maul Shadow Lord Ep 1 & 2 praises how the new series catches up viewers who skipped the homework: "They're teaching you what's happening. So you're not lost."
Anime, and the classics behind it
Animation Destination covers Western animation, anime, independent work and voice acting. It is especially good on anime that newcomers have heard of but not yet watched. 427. The Boy and the Beast takes on Mamoru Hosoda's film with guest Swofford, noting how two Journey to the West characters seem folded into a single pig monk. 428. Anime Movie Night: Bubblegum Crisis is honest about an uneven classic. "I don't think this shows a masterpiece by any stretch," one voice says, and the pair agree it is fun anyway. 430. Re:Zero Seasons 1-3 is a brisk catch-up timed to a new season. For more, go to the Anime page.
Nostalgia with a red pen
Old School Lane is where fond memory meets a stern grade. In Old School Lane Casual Chats: The DiC Entertainment Super Mario Bros. Trilogy, the hosts walk through three Mario cartoons. They complain that the animation sent overseas "was so, so cheap" and settle on 2.5 out of 10.
Old School Lane Casual Chats: We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story places the 1993 film in a moment when there was a feeling that Disney was getting its mojo back. The hosts then list what the film crammed in: an over-the-top villain, extra characters, and a love story. That historical framing is the show's real gift. PixMix Episode 36: Hoppers weighs fans' wish for Pixar to return to more universal stories. Set it beside Talking Simpsons on the same film and you get two quite different reactions. The Film Reviews and Movie Reviews pages carry the argument beyond cartoons.
The people behind the drawings
Connecting with Walt - A look into the history of the man behind Mickey Mouse, Disneyland and Walt Disney World, hosted by Michael Bowling and Tom Bell, treats animation as work done by people. In Disney Television Animation with Melinda Dilger, Dilger recalls producing 52 episodes in six years while serving two masters, as a Mickey revival was pushed to become something hipper. She also describes Rob Marshall visiting the studio and shaking every hand.
Walt Disney's Love of Trains with Michael Campbell tells history through one obsession and includes a neat animation footnote. The book behind Dumbo mentions a circus train in a single sentence, so the film's train is truly a Disney invention. Listeners who want this kind of context on the small screen can continue with the TV Discussion page or the wider TV & Film guide.
