Listening guide

Agriculture podcasts, explained

A shipping lane on the far side of the world can influence the price of a tonne of nitrogen. A milk processor can add five cents a litre to acknowledge rising costs. A spray tank filled from a hard-water well can quietly weaken the herbicide in it. The best agriculture podcasts follow numbers like these to the farm gate. They treat the farm as a business that has weather in it, and they let the people carrying the risk explain what a headline costs them.

The form is broader than its reputation. Some shows are market desks that recap the close before supper. Others are extension services that work through the calving calendar, reporters chasing trade and fuel policy, or long, loose conversations with graziers and ranch families. In March 2026, Edison Research reported that 58% of Americans aged 12 and over had consumed a podcast in the preceding month. That figure describes the medium as a whole and says nothing about farm listening in particular.

Most of the arguments are about fit. Some listeners want hard technical information and find too much lifestyle or faith-framed talk. Some creators say openly that companionship is the point. Tariffs are argued over as a negotiating lever, as a cost to shoppers and as one farm's lived reality. Environmental work keeps returning to a single question: who pays for it.

The market desks

Market Talk and the AgriTalk feeds work like trading-floor radio for producers. In Friday, April 17th, 2026- Scott Varilek and David Widmar, host Jesse Allen and Widmar admit how little anyone knows about planted acres in spring, and Widmar points to the end-of-June acreage report as a useful narrowing. The same episode carries a plain warning: "There is substantial risk of loss in trading futures and options." Keep that warning in mind when guests speculate. On Tuesday, April 14th, 2026- Tyler Schau and Shawn Hackett, Hackett frames protein demand as a contest between oil prices and GLP-1 drugs. It is an argument to follow, not a forecast to act on.

The AgriTalk shows are at their best when a price meets a person. On AgriTalk PM's AgriTalk-March 13, 2026 PM, Garrett Toy worries that a marked-down steak "is still 15 bucks a pound" and that shoppers will drift toward burger, pork and poultry. In AgriTalk AM & PM's AgriTalk-April 14, 2026 PM, meteorologist Eric Snodgrass explains that winter wheat on the Plains missed the cold it needed, then was hit by ice and drought. He recalls a grower expecting yields of 1 to 19 bushels. For the mechanics underneath, the Investing and Economics guides go further.

Country Today is news rather than futures. In Country Today - April 16th, United Dairy Farmers of Victoria president Bernie Free concedes that a five-cent supplier payment is "not as much as it could be." Growing Harvest Ag Network's July 5, 2026 AGRI-BIZ edition sets the start of the USMCA review against the potash farmers buy from Canada.

Trade, fuel and the price of inputs

Agriland Podcasts carries the clearest single explanation of why global shocks land on one farm. In What the Middle East conflict could mean for Irish fertiliser prices, Rabo Research's Sam Taylor explains that even cheap producers "price to the next marginal tonne," so a cheap cost base cannot insulate them from a global squeeze. In the same feed, The Farming Week covers fuel protests, support schemes and TB rule changes.

AHDB's weekly programme appears under three feeds, AHDB Food & Farming, The AG Show and Agonomics, with matching episode titles. In Red meat and dairy exports - how is the Iran war impacting trade? Plus, what farmers are planting, the exports team describes a Middle East representative sending running updates to exporters, and notes that small air-freight consignments have been hit hardest. On the Federated Farmers Podcast's Red meat recovery or short-term bounce? | EP 81, Silver Fern Farms' Dan names farmers' instinct exactly: "this is just a bounce, and when's it going to crash?" The Industry Analysis guide picks up this wider lens.

Running the farm as a business

Farm4Profit Podcast is loud, funny and practical. Spray Tank Mistakes Costing Farmers Thousands turns water chemistry into a lesson about money. Guests report water pH as high as 9.1 and explain what ammonium sulfate actually does, and when the host begs for a shortcut, the answer is "Read the label." From Poop to ROI: Advancements of Manure Management treats manure as a nutrient asset, then spends real time on pit gas, with the line "iron is cheap lives are not."

The Truth About Ag is argument-driven. In The Truth About Turning Farm Data into Decisions with Devin Lammers, a speaker warns that farmers rushing into AI risk "15 half assed apps instead of 15 half ass spreadsheets." Their advice is to take data correctness seriously. Readers drawn to that question will find more on the Agricultural Technology and Farm Business & Economics pages.

Advice by the season

The extension shows are short, calm and built around the next job on the calendar. On The Beef Edge, Catherine Egan's Dairy Calf to Beef (Part 2): From Purchase to Performance - Rearing Dairy-Beef Calves advises a half feed at the next feeding after arrival. It also names poor airflow in renovated sheds as a leading cause of pneumonia. OviCast's Nematodirus Forecast 2026 explains that white drenches now need a prescription and a follow-up dose. Selling store lambs this autumn argues for batching lambs by weight, because a buyer looking for 35-kilo lambs does not want 25-kilo ones.

Flock Talk's Update on Parasite Research with Dr. Emma Borkowski explains how treating every ewe at lambing can seed pasture with resistant worms. AHDB Food & Farming's Spring calving update, fungicide resistance explained and a pork pie without pastry?! compares fungicide resistance to antibiotic resistance and calls managing it a collective job. Continue on the Livestock & Dairy and Crop Management pages.

Grass, soil and organic standards

The Grazing Grass Podcast | Rotational Grazing, Soil Health & Profitable Livestock Farming gives producers room to think out loud. Its featured episode runs long. In 216 | Brett Chedzoy, New York | How to Turn Existing Woodland into Productive Grazing, Chedzoy says that his cows will shelter in "the spruce pine plantations that we call our living barns." He also cautions against clearing too much at once: "Don't set yourself up for the 50-acre train wreck."

The Organic BC Podcast is slower and more precise. The Complex, Vital Work of Updating Canada's Organic Standards shows how a single sentence must work in both English and French before it can become a rule. Both shows lead naturally to the Sustainable & Regenerative Farming page and the Sustainability guide.

Stories, causes and sponsors

Some shows sell belonging more than information, and listeners should hear that difference. The Heart of Rural America mixes ranch stories with a property-rights rally. In Redmond Real Salt for People & Livestock with Karson Rippstein, the guest works in sales for the company and claims its salt does not raise cholesterol, so hear that as a pitch rather than a finding.

American Family Farmer folds a weight-loss sponsor into its conversations, including Organic Fertilizer From the Sea With Ann Molloy of Neptune’s Harvest. Ag Matters Alaska is plainer and warmer: in Ag Matters: Alex Davis with AD Farms, a grower explains that moose strip broccoli rows and also eat carrots. The Federated Farmers Podcast's interview with Jo Luxton spends time on her life as well as on policy.

Glossary

Speak the language

Commodity basis

The difference between a local cash price and the relevant futures-market price for the same commodity. Basis narrows or widens based on local supply-demand conditions, transportation costs, and export demand. A recurring metric in daily ag-market shows like AgriTalk PM.

45Z tax credit

A US federal tax credit for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producers, enacted in 2022 and taking effect in 2025. Corn and soy feedstocks can qualify under certain lifecycle-emissions thresholds, making the credit a significant variable in US row-crop economics as of 2026. Covered extensively by Farm4Profit Podcast.

Bord Bia

The Irish Food Board — the state agency responsible for promoting Irish food, drink, and horticulture exports. A recurring source in Agriland Podcasts' beef and dairy coverage; functions as the Irish export-market intelligence body for livestock processors.

GRDC

Grains Research and Development Corporation — Australian government-industry body that co-invests in grain research, development, and extension. Produces the GRDC Podcast as part of its grower-extension mandate.

Class III milk price

The US federal-order price for milk used to make hard cheeses and whey. A primary pricing benchmark for US dairy farmers and the focus of American Ag Network's Inside Dairy series.

Regenerative agriculture

A set of farming practices aimed at rebuilding soil organic matter and biodiversity — cover cropping, reduced tillage, livestock integration, reduced synthetic inputs. A contested term in 2026: Farm4Profit Podcast's *From Conventional to Regenerative: What Actually Worked (and What Didn't)* is a producer-eye-view of where the economics are real and where they aren't.
