Xanadu Cinema Pleasure Dome

Xanadu Cinema Pleasure Dome is a movie-discussion show with the looseness of friends comparing notes after too many screenings and too little sleep. Its center of gravity is film pleasure, but that pleasure is broad: horror, camp, festival discoveries, big studio spectacle, older genre pictures, and strange artifacts all fit inside the dome. Recent episodes show the series at two speeds. In regular review episodes, the conversation can range across titles such as Tales from the Hood, Scream, The Sentinel, Late Night with the Devil, Fall Guy, Argylle, Cleaner, A Face in the Crowd, and Mickey 17. In festival dispatches, the show turns into a running field report. Those festival entries carry the sound of parking garages, front porches, late nights, food breaks, COVID tests, punch cards, and bodies trying to keep pace with movie slots. The movie talk itself is candid. A film can be admired as well crafted and still described as too slow; a performance can be praised while the whole piece remains outside someone’s taste. The show has an eye for the odd detail. A stacked cast, a weird birthday party for a cat, a deadpan historical comedy, or the mechanics of a secret screening can all become the thing that makes a segment catch fire. It is funny without being tidy. Tangents about ice cream, weather, dogs, notebooks, surgery updates, and recording logistics are part of the texture, not interruptions. The critical range is wider than the casual surface suggests. The speakers make space for goofy action and horror comedy, but they also connect films to colonial history, political backlash, conspiracy thinking, family dysfunction, and the way culture processes harm. The show is not trying to sound like a neutral review desk. It sounds like people with strong preferences, long memories, and a willingness to say when something worked, when it did not, and when they are simply too tired to pretend otherwise. For listeners who enjoy movie podcasts with digressive rhythm and honest reactions, that messiness is the draw.
