whatishipradio's podcast

What Is Hip Radio is built like a Sunday-night handoff from the jazz shelf to the lounge floor. The format is steady. DJ Goldfinger opens with the Jazz Fix, then shifts into the Lounge Mix for the second hour. The first stretch usually begins with straight-ahead jazz. From there, the show works through spicy jazz, jazzy-funky beats, Brazilian-flavored turns, live jazz touchstones, and the recurring Steely Dan bridge into the next mood. It moves with radio confidence. The Lounge Mix loosens the frame without losing the thread, bringing in soulful jazzy house, lo-fi house, downtempo closers, funk-rooted edits, and smooth international selections. Track talk is part of the appeal. Episodes often name release years, countries, labels of feeling, and the little moments that make a tune stick, from a slippery saxophone to a voice that stops DJ Goldfinger mid-recap. The tone is warm and slightly spontaneous. It sounds like a DJ talking from inside a lived-in collection, not a playlist pretending to have taste. Toronto is present throughout. CIUT 89.5 FM anchors the broadcast, while references to local radio, 915 Dupont, 480 East, and the University of Toronto station give the program a grounded community-radio feel. The show also looks outward. Recent sets move through artists and sounds connected to Montreal, Ottawa, the UK, France, Brazil, Germany, Norway, Italy, Colombia, and the United States. Its range is broad, but the groove is consistent. The selections favor music with swing, warmth, musicianship, and late-evening motion. Some episodes feel like a jazz education in real time. Others feel like a lounge set being packed away slowly at the end of the night. The best fit is a listener who wants curation with personality, not algorithmic smoothness. What Is Hip Radio keeps the old radio habit alive: a host, a station, a stack of records, and two hours that know where they are going.
