About This Is Rural Health
This Is Rural Health is the official podcast of the California State Rural Health Association, and it can sound like a rural health conference recorded as a podcast. Some episodes are straight interviews. Others let a presenter talk at length, piling up program names and funding mechanisms before anyone steers. The constant is access: which rural Californians can reach care, what stands in the way, and how systems are being redesigned around them. The show does not stop to define its terms. Medi-Cal, tertiary care, post-acute transfers, continuing resolutions and acronyms such as MDH and LVH are treated as shared vocabulary, so a listener who already knows the field will follow it more easily than one who does not. The voices rotate. Scott Hertzberg, a past president of the association, welcomes listeners in several episodes, while an oral health re-release is led by Heather, a dentist and the association's president, and Michelle Schneider, its board secretary. That episode, 'Re-Release: Oral Health in California with Mary McCune and Zachary Corbo', brings in McCune, a policy director with the California Dental Association. It opens with a speaker arguing that the pandemic showed medicine can no longer work in silos, with dentistry and mental health kept in separate buckets. Dental care is not a one-off here. 'Rethinking Dental Access— Serving the Overlooked' argues that oral health is health care and addresses how hard it is to find providers for Medi-Cal Dental patients, and for Californians who are homebound or bedridden. The policy ranges from state Medi-Cal programs to Congress. 'Health Equity Starts in the Community', which welcomes Dr. Zuniga back to the show, covers Medi-Cal programs designed for people experiencing homelessness, people with serious mental illness or substance use disorders, and people transitioning from incarceration, all built around whole-person care for physical, mental and social needs. 'The Landscape of Rural Health with Brock Slabach' walks through a congressional continuing resolution and the rural programs it extended, along with concerns about patients traveling further and losing access to post-acute care. Care delivery sits right beside the policy. 'Supporting Rural Communities with Telehealth' describes field triage with tertiary care facilities so patients can stay in their own communities, on the reasoning that nobody does well alone and far from family, and asks how partnerships with hospitals can pay for it. 'Behind No More: Demonstrating Rural Advantages with Technology-Enabled Palliative Care' describes a dedicated team that follows seriously ill patients over time and reassesses them often. The register stays measured. It turns grave around end-of-life care and overlooked patients, and warm when a returning guest is welcomed back, but it never turns slick. For a first listen, the Brock Slabach episode suits anyone who wants the federal picture, while the telehealth and palliative care episodes show that policy at work in actual care.
Made for: Suits a listener already comfortable with Medi-Cal, reimbursement and program acronyms who wants to hear how rural California providers, dentists and policy staff approach access, from telehealth triage to dental care for homebound patients. It is a weaker fit for someone looking for personal wellness advice.
What sets it apart: As the official podcast of a state rural health association, it connects California specifics such as Medi-Cal and Medi-Cal Dental to federal action in Congress. It also treats oral health as part of general health care rather than a side topic.

As heard by us
Based on 5 episodes we listened to · September 2026
This Is Rural Health connects policy mechanics to the practical work of keeping care available in rural communities.
Scott Hertzberg often begins with a practical question: what keeps care within reach when distance, staffing and fragile finances work against it? Interviews and conference presentations move between federal funding decisions and care delivered closer to home.
