About The Poor Prole’s Almanac

The Poor Prole’s Almanac is an ecology, agriculture, and political history show with a loose conversational surface and a serious archival engine underneath. It is not tidy. That is part of the point. Episodes wander through jokes, self-corrections, side comments, and sponsor breaks, but the central questions are large and stubborn: how people live with land, how industrial systems shape crisis, and how communities imagine survival when the future feels less stable. Recent episodes show the range. One conversation with Dr. Samantha Bosco uses black walnuts, tree crops, silvopasture, flavor, commercialization, and long-term land management to ask what a future food system could actually require. Another episode with Dr. Susana Monsó turns animal death into a philosophical and scientific question about what other species may understand. A discussion with Dr. Dean McDonnell connects AI, telehealth, biodisaster scenarios, and public anxiety about technology. The show also spends serious time on eco-defense and radical environmental history. Edward Abbey, Earth First, the Earth Liberation Front, Ted Kaczynski, anti-tech politics, state overreach, Waco, Ruby Ridge, and the strange crosscurrents between left and right movements all appear as part of a broader argument about land relations in crisis. The tone can be blunt and irreverent. The analysis is more careful than the banter suggests. The show repeatedly returns to the tension between long-term ecological benefit and economic systems that reward short-term cash flow. It also keeps asking how historical movements get remembered, sanitized, appropriated, or misunderstood. For listeners interested in climate, farming, collapse, radical history, and the politics of place, The Poor Prole’s Almanac offers a dense, unruly, and grounded way into the material.

Made for: For listeners drawn to climate anxiety, farming systems, ecological history, and left political analysis who can handle informal, combative banter around serious subjects.

What sets it apart: It treats agriculture and land defense as one connected historical field, moving from crops and taste to technology, state power, and radical environmental movements without sanding off the contradictions.

In their own words

Climate Change got you down? Worried about the fact that *everything* seems to be getting worse? Wondering how we got to this point in the first place, and what can we do to build a more resilient future? We take a look at historical pastoral & agricultural societies to see what worked and what didn’t, as well as what resources we have today to make better decisions to build equitable systems. We don’t just discuss ecology and history but also take a leftist perspective on prepping, foraging, homesteading, weapons, community-building, and basically anything that needs discussing during late-stage capitalism.

As heard by us

Based on 6 episodes we listened to · September 2026

Specific conversations connect ecological practice with the political and philosophical ideas shaping how people understand land, technology, and other species.

The Poor Prole's Almanac follows questions about land and technology into the political ideas beneath them. Andy brings an informal, questioning manner to conversations that can move from black walnut cultivation to animal understandings of death, leaving guests enough room to…
