About The Hive Poetry Collective
The Hive Poetry Collective is a Santa Cruz-based poetry program that makes room for poems to be heard, questioned, and lived with. It carries the feel of community radio: local, direct, event-aware, and close to the people making the work. The show’s center of gravity is conversation. A poet reads, a host listens closely, and then the episode follows the poem’s images, turns, uncertainties, and emotional weather. The discussions can be deeply literary without becoming sealed off from ordinary life. Recent episodes move through family memory, childhood during the Nepalese Civil War, migration, grief, spiritual practice, unhoused life, psychosis, love, divorce, poetic influence, and the long labor of shaping sentences. Craft matters here. So does tenderness. A discussion of Emily Dickinson and Joyce Carol Oates can become a meditation on being seen and finding a place in the world. A conversation about vultures can open into elegy, hunger, death, and what poetry transforms. Richard Siken speaks about stroke, determination, truth, lies, family therapy, and the force of a sentence. Elizabeth Robinson’s Vulnerability Index brings the show into difficult civic and human terrain, including unhoused life and fractured story. Albert Flynn DeSilver’s poems lead toward presence, desire, Whitman, Lorca, and writing as awakening. January Gill O’Neil’s work brings memory, vulnerability, and public history into the room. The show is also clearly rooted in a living literary scene. Bookshop Santa Cruz readings, the Muse, Hive Live, and the Morton Marcus Poetry Project are not side notes; they are part of the show’s social fabric. The tone is generous, but not shallow. Hosts often praise a poem by showing exactly where it turns, how an image gathers power, or why a line arrives with force. That patience is the show’s appeal. It is less a poetry news feed than a record of people reading carefully together. For listeners who miss the texture of readings, workshops, bookstores, and after-event conversations, The Hive Poetry Collective offers a steady, humane place to return.
Made for: For readers, writers, workshop regulars, and poetry-curious listeners who enjoy thoughtful conversations about craft, memory, place, and lived experience. It especially suits people drawn to contemporary poetry and local literary communities.
What sets it apart: The show stands out by combining close textual attention with the texture of Santa Cruz literary life. Rather than treating poems as topics to summarize, it follows their images, turns, and emotional risks in real time.
