About Talk Heathen

Talk Heathen is a live atheist call-in show where religious claims are handled as arguments, not as protected feelings. The format is simple and durable: open lines, skeptical hosts, and callers who want to defend, question, or rethink belief. That simplicity gives the show room to roam. One episode may test whether prayer is communication with God or an anxiety ritual. Another may pick apart apocalyptic fear, reality television scandals centered on faith, or the old accusation that atheism naturally produces communism. The show is comfortable with philosophy. Plato’s forms, cosmology, morality, and secular humanism all appear as fair game when callers bring them to the table. It is also grounded in ordinary damage. Religious trauma, family pressure, social exclusion, anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, harmful jokes, and the way faith can excuse accountability are treated as lived realities rather than abstract debate topics. Christy Powell’s episodes often bring a counseling-informed patience to those conversations. The show can still be blunt. It does not pretend that every opinion is equally respectable, especially when the subject is harm. That tension is central to its identity: compassion for people, skepticism toward claims, and no obligation to flatter ideas that fail under scrutiny. Callers who believe are invited into real conversation, but they are expected to answer questions. Callers who do not believe are repeatedly framed as part of a community rather than a loose audience of isolated skeptics. The pacing has the unpredictability of live radio. Some exchanges are philosophical, some personal, some political, and some wander before finding the point. The show’s best moments happen when a caller’s certainty meets patient pressure and has to become more precise. For PlayNext listeners, Talk Heathen suits anyone who wants atheism with debate, social conscience, and live conversational friction.

Made for: For atheists, theists, questioning listeners, and ex-religious listeners who want religious claims tested through conversation. It also suits people interested in secular morality, religious trauma, and the social consequences of belief.

What sets it apart: Talk Heathen’s edge is its live-call format: arguments are not polished essays, they are handled in the moment. The show pairs atheist skepticism with an unusually explicit concern for compassion, community, and harm.
