About Shite Talk: An Irish History Podcast
Shite Talk is Irish history with the dust knocked off it. The show is built around a two-person rhythm: one speaker drives a researched story forward while the other interrupts, doubts, riffs, and tests whether the whole thing sounds remotely sane when said out loud. It is loose without being lazy. Episodes often begin in banter, sport, old cultural references, or a complaint about some current Irish fixation, then snap back into a researched tale from the past. The subjects range widely. A Wexford connection to Zorro can sit beside Shergar, Guinness Book of Records politics, Patrick O'Connell, Paddy McCarthy, James McClean, forgotten Irish football films, and Phil Lynott. Football keeps returning because, here, it is never only football. It is identity, exile, flags, poppies, grudges, club loyalty, and the eternal question of why Ireland helped everyone else get good at the game first. Music works the same way. The Phil Lynott material is not just a greatest-hits stroll; it turns into a story about charisma, touring, stagecraft, and how legends acquire several people who later claim to have invented them. The show is especially good at puncturing famous names. Titles, institutions, patriotic rituals, and respectable men all get dragged back to ordinary speech, where their logic can look much less impressive. That does not mean the darker material is softened. Episodes touch The Troubles, Bloody Sunday, racism, anti-Irish prejudice, bombing campaigns, apartheid sympathies, and political violence. The approach is blunt, sometimes chaotic, and often very funny, but the humor usually sharpens the point rather than dodging it. Shite Talk works because it treats Irish memory as argument, not heritage wallpaper. It is for listeners who want history with jokes, football detours, cultural suspicion, and enough research underneath the mess to make the mess worth following.
Made for: For listeners who like Irish history with football, music, politics, strange biographical turns, and jokes that keep the reverence in check. It especially suits people who enjoy researched storytelling that still sounds like a lively table conversation.
What sets it apart: The show makes Irish history feel immediate by testing old claims against modern common sense, comic disbelief, and cultural memory. Its best episodes turn a niche story into a bigger argument about Ireland, sport, empire, fame, and national self-image.
