Austrian banter, badly behaved seriousness.

The gist

Schwarz & Rubey runs on the friction between quick jokes and unfinished serious thoughts. Simon Schwarz and Manuel Rubai move from suits, cake, hotel rooms, and listener mail into social media, creativity, family, violence, loss, and the awkward business of making art in public.

About Schwarz & Rubey

Schwarz & Rubey is a two-person Austrian conversation show with the shape of a detour and the weight of a diary entry someone keeps pretending is just a joke. Simon Schwarz and Manuel Rubai begin with whatever is nearby: a suit, an alcohol-free wine, a technician’s remark about AI, a birthday, a hotel room, a listener’s email. Then the topic widens. Social media becomes a question about work, visibility, teenagers, and who gets to opt out. A story about a dog turns into grief. A discussion of a new program called Love becomes, almost against its will, a relationship analysis conducted in public. The episodes keep correcting themselves. One thought interrupts another, a joke lands sideways, and then a sentence about death or violence is allowed to stay serious for a moment. That mix is the point. The show is not tidy topical comedy, and it is not a solemn cultural salon either. It is conversation by people used to stage, film, rehearsal rooms, press texts, audience reactions, and the strange pressure to turn private confusion into something presentable. The Austrian comic register is dry and elastic. It can handle Braunschlag talk with David Schalko, a debate about whether performers need social media, and listener stories about seeing Simon Schwarz in Vienna without changing its basic rhythm. The show often feels like a friendship trying to make a format out of its own interruptions. That gives it charm, but also bite. It is willing to talk about systemic violence against women, sadness, aging, politics, and family without pretending the jokes erase the subject. For listeners who like polished conclusions, it may feel restless. For listeners who enjoy watching a thought become honest in real time, it has a very specific pull.

Made for: For listeners who like conversational comedy with cultural references, theatre-world texture, and sudden reflective turns. Best for people comfortable with loose structure, dry humor, and serious subjects appearing without warning.

What sets it apart: Its strength is the way trivial details keep opening into larger questions without becoming a lecture. The duo lets mistakes, interruptions, listener mail, and meta-comments stay in the room, so the show feels unusually alive.

In their own words
