About Read-Aloud Revival ®

Read-Aloud Revival is a family-literacy show with a homeschool heart. Its central idea is that reading aloud is not just for little children, and not just for academics. It is a way to build connection. Sarah McKenzie returns often to the same practical question from different angles: how can books become part of a family’s actual life? The answers are concrete. Episodes talk about developing readers who still find reading exhausting, older kids who can already read alone, summer days that need gentle structure, and homeschool years that benefit from remembering their best moments. The show likes usable formats: book lists, read-aloud strategies, family book clubs, printable activities, and open-and-go guides. It is also more ambitious than a tips program. Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Jan Brett picture books, George Washington’s cherry tree, and C.S. Lewis can all become material for imagination, virtue, laughter, and conversation. The tone is warm, earnest, and parent-facing, with a strong bias toward delight over pressure. It values fluency, cadence, language patterns, and the sound of books in a home. Guest episodes widen the lens into parenting, attachment, time, goals, faith, and the formation of children’s inner lives. Dr. Matthew Bruninger brings the language of secure attachment and connection. Jon Acuff reframes goals through a “best moments” list. Laura Vanderkam brings a sharper view of time and household assumptions. Audrey appears in conversations about questions, courage, and stories that shape character. Across these threads, the show keeps returning to a generous premise: family reading can be light enough to begin today and meaningful enough to matter for years. It is thoughtful without becoming abstract. It is practical without becoming mechanical. Above all, it treats books as a shared table, not a finish line.

Made for: Parents, homeschoolers, and family-minded readers who want children to love books without turning reading into constant pressure. It especially suits families looking for read-aloud ideas, book lists, and gentle structure.

What sets it apart: The show blends read-aloud advocacy with concrete family routines, moving easily from Shakespeare and picture books to developing readers, attachment, and homeschool reflection. Its strength is making literary family life feel approachable and repeatable.

In their own words

Sarah Mackenzie helps your family fall in love with books, and helps *you* fall in love with homeschooling.

Best episodes of Read-Aloud Revival ®

Short reviews from the PlayNext desk, based on the episodes we processed.

RAR #279: Baptizing the Imagination with Malcolm GuiteApr 16, 2026

A bookish summer invitation that pairs Shakespeare, Jan Brett, and a brief Lewis reflection on imagination.

Read-Aloud Revival frames RAR's Summer Adventure as a flexible summer pick for families who want stories at the center of the season. It lays out two paths, a four week look at Shakespeare's As You Like It or a three week run through three Jan Brett picture books, with videos,…

Best of RAR: Why Read Aloud to Kids Who Can Read ThemselvesFeb 5, 2026

A steady case for keeping read-aloud time going after children can already read.

Sarah McKenzie makes a steady case for keeping read-aloud time in place even after children can read on their own. The argument is practical rather than romantic: more reading aloud is tied to better test scores, and she is blunt about the payoff, suggesting it can do more than…

RAR #276: Learning to Ask Good Questions (Audrey’s Back!)Jan 22, 2026

A warm case for treating kids questions as a doorway, not a problem to solve.

Read-Aloud Revival makes a plain case for slowing down and taking childrens questions seriously. It treats those questions as part of imagination, not a nuisance to be solved, and ties that view to a family centered love of books and story.

RAR #275: Could We Have Tranquility by Tuesday? Laura VanderkamJan 8, 2026

A calm, concrete look at where time actually goes.

The piece keeps its footing in practical detail, especially in the 168-hour week, the habit of overestimating housework, and the simple point that a dishwasher looks different once someone actually times it.

RAR #273: Imagining the Childhood of C.S. Lewis, with Judith McQuoidOct 16, 2025

A Belfast-centered look at C.S. Lewis that widens into myth, memory, and summer reading.

The episode presents C.S. Lewis as a Belfast figure who inspires both gratitude and a touch of flummoxedness, and it uses The Giant of Belfast to open the subject outward.
