About Pinoy Patriarch Project
Pinoy Patriarch Project is built around one question: what does leadership look like for a man of Filipino descent, at home, at work and in his community? Host Mike Pana, who also introduces himself as Michael Pana, does not treat that as abstract. He describes himself as a husband, a father of three boys and a full-time protector, and he argues outward from those roles. The show works in two modes. One is solo commentary, where the host takes a position and builds it from family history and what he has seen himself. The other is interviews with Filipino and Filipino-American men he holds up for their strength, honor and courage. The solo pieces state their premises plainly. In 'Lakas Talk: Why the Way You Look MATTERS', he argues that fitness and a professional appearance give a man presence. He notes that his own training has improved things with his wife, and that his son now wants to work out too. He adds that a fit guy walking into a school building on a protective detail earns more confidence than an out-of-shape one. In 'Lakas Talk: Why Being a Stay-At-Home Dad is NOT Masculine', he answers reactions to an earlier post and says his claim is about the position, not the men in it. For him the line between boys and men is responsibility and the ability to produce, not size or strength. He blames the toxicity in Filipino male culture on males who never learned what responsibility means. He will argue with peers, too. 'My Review on TFAL’s Discussion on Filipino-American Masculinity' responds to another podcast. He draws on his father's time unemployed and at home, and on his own period running a business from home while raising a child. Still, it closes hopeful: with constructive discussion, he suggests, the 'toxic Pinoy' label could become a thing of the past. The interviews let guests tell their own stories before steering back to values. Tuhon Carl Atienza has been the host's teacher and mentor since the host was 17. He leads the Atienza Kali System, a Filipino martial art his family developed for multiple attackers and edged-weapon attacks. That conversation covers his rough upbringing, training as a response to violence in his neighborhood, his father, his Filipino-American identity and his wife, Diane. Tuhon Leo Manalo, a master-level Atienza Kali instructor, remembers losing faith in drills that fell apart against people outside his system, before a friend pointed him to the Atienzas. Survival instructor Kevin Estela describes a close bond with his Filipino father and a home where heritage lived under an American identity. The register is conversational and measured, grave by default but warm when the host speaks about his mentors. What a listener gets is a clear, firmly held standard for Filipino manhood, and guests presented as proof that it can be lived.
Made for: Suits a listener who wants a personal, strongly held take on being a Filipino or Filipino-American husband, father and provider, and who is comfortable with firm positions on masculinity next to martial arts instructors' stories of training and family.
What sets it apart: It sets arguments about responsibility and manhood beside interviews with Atienza Kali instructors, so a debate about stay-at-home fathers and appearance sits next to stories of blade training, mentorship and a rough upbringing. It also answers other Filipino-American voices directly, as in its response to TFAL.
