About Leading Second Podcast

Leading Second Podcast is a leadership show for people carrying ministry weight from the middle of a church team. It speaks directly to the second-chair experience: real influence, limited control, high trust, and a constant need for alignment. The show’s central idea is simple. Leadership is ownership. Recent episodes return to that idea through teaching on Lead It Like You Own It, conversations with the L2 Coaching Team, and interviews with Roger & Sarah Stanton, Dr. Christopher Palmer, and Julian Lowe. The register is pastoral, urgent, and practical. It favors conviction over polish, with repeated calls toward humility, character, service, and faithfulness when no one is watching. One thread challenges leaders to stop waiting for a bigger title before taking responsibility. Another warns that gifting and visibility can outpace the character needed to sustain them. The show also gives serious attention to the condition of a leader’s heart. Counseling, trauma, healing, peacemaking, and hidden pain are treated as part of leadership formation rather than private side issues. Team culture matters here. So do ethics, surrender, and the ability to serve a pastor’s vision without entitlement. Episodes often draw a sharp contrast between building big ministry and building effective ministry. That distinction gives the show much of its edge. It is deeply church-centered, with frequent language about Jesus, the kingdom of God, the body of Christ, and the mission of the local church. At the same time, the advice is operational enough for staff meetings, leadership pipelines, and team development conversations. The pace can feel like a sermon, a coaching session, and a behind-the-scenes ministry debrief in the same hour. Listeners should expect direct exhortation rather than detached analysis. The best fit is a leader who wants language for the tensions of serving from the middle and wants the spiritual formation work that comes with it.

Made for: For church staff, pastors, ministry builders, and emerging leaders serving a larger vision without always being in charge. It especially suits second-chair leaders wrestling with ownership, character, team health, and calling.

What sets it apart: The show centers the pressures of second-chair leadership in local churches, treating the middle seat as a place of real responsibility rather than a waiting room. Its mix of pastoral intensity, leadership development, and inner-life care gives it a narrower, more formational lane than general church management podcasts.
