About Don't IEP Alone.

Don't IEP Alone approaches special education advocacy from the ground level: the home routine, the school report, the question to the team, the January reminder that spring meetings are closer than they look. Lisa's episodes are not polished lectures. They sound like working sessions for parents who are already carrying too much and still need to make a plan. The show spends real time on IEP data, because progress claims only matter when families can understand them, test them, and compare them across settings. A school may report that a child can put on a shirt independently. Home may tell a different story. Lisa uses that kind of mismatch to show why parents should ask for specifics, videos, presentation details, and context rather than defaulting to blame. The goal is evidence. The posture is firm but not automatically adversarial. That balance gives the show much of its value. It recognizes that collaboration is possible while also making clear that families cannot afford to drift through the process. Episodes push listeners toward logs, trend tracking, reevaluation preparation, ESY timing, and practical questions that can be brought back to the team. The show also acknowledges that advocacy does not happen in a vacuum. Family separation, grief, politics, gun violence, and the pressure to protect personal energy all appear as part of the terrain around special needs parenting. Those moments are more personal, but they still connect to the same central concern: parents need enough clarity and steadiness to keep advocating. The delivery is casual, direct, and occasionally messy in a human way, with references to Facebook Live recording, client meetings, academy sessions, and the realities of fitting advocacy work into a packed day. Several recent excerpts are subscription notices, so the public digest gives an incomplete picture of the full catalog. Even so, the available episodes make the show's lane clear. It is for families who want practical IEP help without pretending the emotional load is separate from the paperwork.

Made for: This show is for parents and caregivers navigating IEP meetings, school data, progress reports, reevaluations, and ESY decisions. It especially suits families who want practical advocacy guidance that acknowledges stress, conflict, and real home routines.

What sets it apart: Don't IEP Alone pairs concrete special education tactics with candid discussion of the emotional and family pressures surrounding advocacy. Its strongest moments turn everyday observations at home into usable data for school conversations.

In their own words

Inspired by her own son with disabilities, Lisa Lightner is an award-winning blogger and advocate. She has previously worked for her county's Arc and has served on the Boards of Directors for several disability organizations. Currently, she is her county's chairperson for the Right to Education Task Force, a federally decreed group set up in 1971 to ensure that all children in Pennsylvania had the opportunity to an education. When not attending IEP meetings with families or lobbying in Harrisburg and DC for disability rights, she can be found on the web at her IEP advice blog, A Day in our Sh...
