Architecture as civic evidence.
The gist
Açık Mimarlık is a measured architecture program rooted in Turkey’s urban and professional debates. It moves from concrete sites such as Saraçhane, Kadıköy, Tepebaşı, and diplomacy buildings toward larger questions about law, labor, public value, and cultural memory.

About Açık Mimarlık
Açık Mimarlık is architecture criticism with a public agenda. Its center of gravity is not the glossy image of a building, but the civic system that makes a building possible, contested, neglected, awarded, restored, or erased. The show often begins with a specific place. Saraçhane becomes a way to think about Valens Aqueduct, municipal buildings, Byzantine traces, modernist planning, public gatherings, and the meanings that attach to urban ground over time. Kadıköy’s filled waterfront becomes a legal and environmental question, tied to municipal authority, parcel status, demolition, flood risk, and pollution in the Marmara Sea. The program is comfortable with process. It follows plans, court decisions, restoration reports, institutional responsibility, and professional obligations without flattening them into slogans. Labor is one of its recurring concerns. Episodes on international working conditions connect Turkey to England, Italy, Greece, and Afghanistan through low pay, unpaid overtime, false freelancing, long hours, and the difficulty of securing social rights. Prestige is not exempt from examination. When architecture awards and competitions appear, the show asks who finances them, who decides, what relationships sit behind them, and what accepting recognition can mean. It also has a strong historical sense. Discussions of Istanbul’s Italian heritage and diplomacy architecture move through palaces, hospitals, restoration permissions, archives, visual records, and abandoned buildings awaiting decisions. The tone is steady. The arguments build by accumulation rather than speed. There is room for regret over unrealized projects, such as the Frank Gehry cultural complex discussed in the year review, but the regret is tied to urban consequences rather than spectacle. The show is best understood as a civic architecture table: patient, skeptical, locally grounded, and alert to how cities remember power.
Made for: Suited to architects, planners, urbanists, heritage workers, students, and public-minded listeners interested in how buildings meet law, labor, memory, and municipal power.
What sets it apart: Açık Mimarlık stands out for treating architecture as a civic condition rather than a style conversation. It connects site-specific detail to labor politics, restoration practice, legal process, and the public life of Turkish cities.

Why you'd press play
This is where an Istanbul waterfront plan gets the same scrutiny as architecture's unpaid overtime.
Press play if you want
- to follow the paper trail when a public waterfront changes hands
- to compare how architects get squeezed by low wages and fake freelancing across countries
