Sophie Bouniol

March 29, 2021·34 min·2 clips
The first detective into Sophie's house on Christmas Eve found her shoes neatly lined at the bottom of white-painted stairs — and her bed built a meter off the floor so she could watch a lighthouse through her uncurtained window at night.
First light brings the wrong kind of quiet. Gilligan enters ready for broken glass and signs of a fight. What he finds is stranger: the poetry book, the honey, the spotless white stairs. The house seems paused mid-breath. Shoes wait at the bottom, clothing turns up in the bathroom, and ordinary rooms suddenly feel hard to trust. Sophie stays just out of reach. A silent birthday film shows her on a Paris rooftop, brushing hair from her face in the wind. She laughs, then seems to pull back into herself. The camera catches both presence and distance, a face that opens and then closes. Daniel says love was her ideal. His memories point to a woman who wanted something whole and was hurt by the compromises around her. Their marriage had mistresses, a difficult patch, and Sophie's affair with the French artist Bruno Carbonet. Bruno's story darkens after that. Friends recall strange things sent through the post, cut paintings, a large screw, and frightening confrontations. Police checked his alibi. He had been to Ireland with Sophie before, more than once, but not that weekend. Daniel is left with grief that will not settle. He says Sophie's death was not fate. Someone had done it. By the end, the hills feel loaded, and every close detail gives something away without giving enough.
