S4: E07 - Agonia Perpetua

May 20, 2024·28 min·2 clips
Roman explains the star is actually afraid, not just hateful, changing everything they thought about their enemy.
The episode opens mid-action with characters recovering from a cave-in. Elliot finds Roman near a rift that had previously been sealed off due to a star-related threat. Elliot and Claire are immediately suspicious — Roman has been under the entity's influence — but Roman asserts his identity with characteristic humour. He proposes a plan, saying he has been recovering memories from within the entity. Roman explains that the feeling he initially interpreted as hatred for humanity was actually fear — the spiralling star is afraid of another star, an entity with competing motives. Claire recalls a passage from a sacred book that referenced the true and rightful star, suggesting the language acknowledged a rival. Naya's phrase from the other is reinterpreted as a reference to this rival star, not to other worlds. If Elliot is an anomaly that the opposing star can work through, stepping voluntarily through a specific altered rift could create enough force to neutralise the spiralling star. Roman argues this must be Elliot's choice — not coerced by Amara or Naya but freely made. Claire agrees reluctantly, acknowledging there are no better options. Roman then addresses Claire about his children: he is glad they do not know the state he is in, and asks Claire to tell them their father was brave. The brothers say their farewells to Ryan and Claire. Roman and Elliot approach the rift, Roman noting that the darkness within him cannot pass through, but Elliot's presence gives them enough combined force to expel it. They choose the left path and step through together. The scene transitions to Professor Ryan's public broadcast from Bunker A12: the rift is closed, the creatures are gone, Amara is alive but wounded and has been shown mercy, and the brothers' last trace is a hand-in-hand silhouette burned into the wall. Ryan acknowledges they may never understand the full scope of the intergalactic conflict they were involved in, but affirms hope for rebuilding. A prior monologue from Elliot — apparently written before the final confrontation — reflects on the cult's members: many were deceived true believers who wanted a better world, and only Roman's love may have kept Elliot from being one of them. Sean Pellington closes the episode with a direct address to listeners, crediting the cast and thanking Patreon supporters by name.

As heard by us

A bruised, intimate episode where loyalty has to outrun the dark.

The episode keeps survival from turning into clean heroics. Roman, Claire, Ryan, and Gareth move toward a half-doorway, half-verdict, while the trapped nothingness and the demon voice keep the horror close to the ribs.
