22 | The Truth According To Jon

May 16, 2025·43 min·3 clips
John Gurtin shares his chilling theory that Florence might have walked into the ocean the morning she vanished.
Her phone and shoes stayed behind. The detail arrives late, almost casually, as the guest remembers folding bedding and finding the things she normally would have taken with her. The host slows him down. He wants that next afternoon pinned down, not softened into one blurry memory of panic and explanation. The answer does not quite settle. The guest says he was picking things up when he found them, and the host keeps asking why he was not curious earlier about what she may have left behind. It is such a plain question that it gets harder to dodge. If someone leaves without a phone and without shoes, the whole story changes right away. The guest reaches for context. He says she had been given hospital medication and had been drinking, and he treats that combination as a reason she may not have been thinking clearly. Then he offers the theory he seems to have been carrying: maybe she walked into the ocean. The host presses on that, especially because the guest also says she had talked about wanting to live. He has been to West Beach, so he pushes the theory against the actual place. The other possibility is worse. The guest says somebody may have gotten her, and the host asks the practical question underneath that phrase: who was close enough? No clean name comes. The guest mentions the guy next to him, then backs away from it by saying he goes to church and is a nice guy. The host catches that, too. When church becomes a shortcut for trust, the host points out that the guest goes to church as well. Nothing gets solved. The pressure stays on a missing phone, a pair of shoes, and a story that keeps trying to make sense of why they were left behind.

As heard by us

A tense Up and Vanished interview built around abandoned belongings, beach-camp theories, and a host pressing Jon for specifics.

The Truth According To Jon narrows in on one uncomfortable interview: what happened after a woman apparently left a beach camp without her phone, her shoes, or the bedding Jon had made for her. The host keeps pressing on the small things that do not sit right.
