0706 | My Friend Israel, part 1

November 10, 2025·51 min·4 clips
Scott says listening to Keys's FBI interview was 'triggering' because he recognized the specific tone of voice — frustrated, stern, heavy — from watching Keys fix fences and milk goats at the compound.
January 2025 gives the interview its hinge, but the story does not come out neatly. The host says an email arrived from Israel Keys's childhood friend, identified here as Scott, then asks how he knew Keys and his family. Scott answers in pieces. He remembers guns being around all the time, including a rubber-coated 10/22 with a folding stock like the one he connected with Keys. Nobody in the room tries to make that sound dramatic. Soda cans, wandering around, and boyhood western fantasies sit right beside details that feel much heavier now. Washington becomes the place his memory keeps returning to. Scott puts those visits roughly between 1992 and 1996, with stays that could be a week or could stretch to three weeks, depending on the year. The cabin sticks. He describes a remote place still being worked on, stacked windows, damage to the property, and a fire outside on the front steps. He owns his part in it, then catches up to what the place may have meant to the person who came back and found it that way. Memory keeps moving under his feet. A ghost-story image feels almost real to him, until he stops and marks it as maybe fictional, only partly fed by real life. The revolver detail lands quietly: a snub-nose 38, as Scott remembers it, often in a pocket or tucked at Keys's waist. The family frame widens too. Scott recalls adults arranging firearms or other items during visits, and one year towing an old 1970s dirt bike from Utah to Washington. Payment is hazy. He thinks the bike may have been more of a contribution, mainly for Israel then, before the host sends listeners toward part two.

As heard by us

A measured, detail-heavy return to the Keyes case that rewards listeners who can sit with the drift.

The episode starts with a travel announcement, then settles into Scott's recollections of Israel Keyes, a childhood friend, and Keyes's February 2004 trip to Utah.
