There’s a Hitchhiker On The Road | Episode 2

March 30, 2020·38 min·3 clips
The hitchhiker gets in the car, starts chatting pleasantly, and then says something to Bristol that he could not have known unless he had been researching her.
The episode opens with Bristol attempting to reach journalist Alice Sharman through American Stories in Chicago, using a fake British BBC identity. The receptionist informs her there is no record of Alice Sharman ever working there, deepening Bristol's unease about Alice's disappearance. The convoy moves through a tunnel and Ferryman, the guide, warns of a trap corner at the exit. Rob explains the original log-writer believed the road itself was deceptive, planting false turns to mislead travelers. Bristol finds this hard to take seriously but notes that Rob seems to invite her skepticism. Ferryman gathers the group and issues the hitchhiker instructions: each car must travel alone for thirteen turns, pick up a well-dressed man with a case, but never speak to him, look at him, or accept anything from him. Bristol and Rob proceed first. Lilith reports that everyone's calls to the outside world are going unanswered, though they can reach each other. The hitchhiker appears eight turns later, well-dressed in a brown suit and green tie with a varnished wooden case. He gets in and chats pleasantly before making a targeted remark to Bristol about how she does not know how to belong even in places where she fits. He offers to tell her things about herself, then pulls out an old photo from the glove box. He takes it with him when he leaves, saying he wants something to remember them by. After the encounter, Bristol hits the brakes hard and Rob warns her not to do anything she will regret. At the stopping point, they debrief. Rob admits he once nearly spoke to the hitchhiker himself. Bristol describes a crashed car she saw off the road, which Rob says he has never seen in all his time on that stretch. Each convoy member reports a different experience with the hitchhiker: Clyde was offered travel suits, Apollo almost discussed music taste, and Ace arrives pale and visibly shaken. That evening at camp, Bristol, Lilith, Eve, and Apollo share a campfire conversation speculating about the rules of the road. Bristol notes to herself that Rob used a detail about the crashed car's direction that he should not have known if he genuinely had never seen it. She is left torn between trusting him and suspecting him of orchestrating the whole experience.

As heard by us

A roadside mystery that turns a failed phone call into something quietly menacing.

The episode opens on a small social snag: Bristol makes a failed call to American Stories and gets stopped by a strict policy. That little moment sets the tone well.
