Episode 210: Creatives Are The New Superheroes!

November 4, 2021·41 min·3 clips
Tom Ross argues creatives are the new superheroes in a creator economy where you can start selling your work tomorrow.
The mood is grateful, not glossy. A host frames creative life right now as a strange, lucky moment where permission, tools, and routes to market sit much closer together than they did for parents and grandparents. Nobody treats that as easy. The contrast is between older gatekeepers like jobs, galleries, and publishers, and the current ability to make something and sell it. That is the superhero bit, though the show keeps it pretty grounded. No capes, just practical agency: a creative person can move between writing, music, visual art, and whatever opportunity fits. Then the conversation gets wonderfully specific. NFTs become the test case because one host admits the wallets and setup are confusing enough that an artist might gladly share revenue with someone who handles the machinery. That turns into a business idea sitting right there in the open: talented artists bring the work and audience, while someone else sets up the process, splits proceeds, and takes the fear out of unfamiliar tech. Photoshop chores get the same treatment. Someone needs watercolor pieces cut out cleanly, backgrounds removed, and repetitive production work handled by a specialist who is easier to hire than to find through search. Even kerning fonts becomes a confession. The joke works because several people admit they would rather pay someone than burn hours on a task they understand well enough but have no desire to do. So the optimism stays useful. This is less pep talk than working designers noticing that every annoying creative bottleneck might be someone else's paid niche. The advice comes through stories, messy ideas, and quick handoffs, with enough confusion left in to make the practical parts feel earned. By the end, the show swerves into mixed metaphors, surfboards, plums, and a tiny hashtag joke, which keeps the inspiration from getting too shiny.

As heard by us

A cheerful designer roundtable turns creative optimism into practical ideas for niche work people will actually pay for.

The Honest Designers Show makes a bright, slightly chaotic case for creative work as both vocation and livelihood. Its optimism is broad, but the sharpest material is small-bore and practical: an artist who wants NFT sales without learning wallets, a designer who would happily…
