Grease (1978)

March 10, 2026·1 hr 41 min·5 clips
Grease arrives with paperwork, and then immediately stops behaving like paperwork. Ben names the film, the director, the wide cast, and the show's good, bad, or classic test. John and Elle are there, Talia is on a lap, the babysitter has left, and the baby sounds become part of the episode instead of something to hide. That looseness suits the movie talk. They start with background and familiarity, with Elle clearly getting watched for first reactions, but nobody sands the conversation smooth. Grease is treated like a movie everyone knows and still has reasons to argue about. The bathroom scene gives them the most to chew on. Sandra Dee is a good song and a nasty one, almost at once. They hear the joke, but they also hear the bite. The girls are being cruel, and the panel keeps measuring that against how blunt and useful the song is inside the film. Then musical rules enter the argument: Sandy is right behind the door, yes, but musicals can bend reality until a spotlight does the emotional sorting. Frenchie matters in that bend. She starts as the nice one, hangs back, and still gets pulled into the group. Sandy takes the hit. Her return to the room lands as genuinely sad, not just setup for the next number. The closing jumps from Grease to Labyrinth, with quick confusion over whether that counts as a musical. David Bowie settles enough of it. Loose, blunt, affectionate, and still bothered by how much charm can sit beside cruelty.
